Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the restriction of a conference at both of a public exchange telephone network(PSTN) and its external network by supplying a conference server with a link to an external network for the PSTN. SOLUTION: A new element exists in a conference control center and is related with at least a data route. This center 2a includes a conference managing system 20a and a conference server system 30. The system 30 is a computer system which is maintained and managed by the PSTN and suited to communication, and includes connection 31 to a conference managing system such as the system 20a. By rough integration with the call managing resource of the PSTN, the system 30 becomes capable of controlling a service relatively executed to a conventional PSTN conference connection in response to a signal sent through the external route of the PSTN. The example of the external route of the PSTN is the external connection 32 to a web.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a device to control wide variety of services by allowing PSTN users to make communication with a call management resource via a network at the outside of a public switched telephone network PSTN and a device adaptive to communication with the call management resource. SOLUTION: A customer's computer 30 directly communicates with a system 31 that is a TAI component of a telephone station and of a PSTN via a public data network 32 at the outside of the PSTN and servers 33, 34 managed by the PSTN. The server 33 is a data server linking to an external data network. The server 34 acts as a firewall server that protects the system 31 being a service management system of a telephone company against an illegal access from an unauthenticated person and that interacts with the server 33. The arbitration by a service personnel in charge is eliminated by a function of a component in the system 31, and a customer executes a desired revision of a service or a function with a computer and a web 32 via the servers 33, 34.

Abstract: An apparatus and method in a tablet computer for disambiguating a handwriting input stream generated by a stylus-based user interface. A tablet application program interface (TAPI) of the present invention receives stroke data generated by a stroke made by a user on a digitizing tablet. The TAPI inserts the stroke data into a database. If the stroke is an editing gesture, the TAPI routes the stroke to a gesture recognizer which identifies an editing dialog. The TAPI then executes the dialog to perform operations on the database. If the application program is expecting text input, the TAPI continues to receive stroke data until it detects a closure event. The TAPI then forms a stroke group entry in the database by grouping all non-gesture stroke data received since the last closure event. The TAPI routes the stroke group data to a character recognizer, which returns candidate characters. The TAPI inserts the candidate characters into the stroke group entry. The TAPI notifies the application program each time it updates the database.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided which permits mobile computers equipped with modems for cellular telephone systems to obtain various classes of data communication services, as well as voice service, including taking part in local-area networks. The LAN's may be composed of real LANs in establishments or of other mobile computers. In this way, mobile computers can take part in mainstream client-server computing and also establish ad hoc wireless LANs using the cellular telephone system.
