    Abstract: A multiple disk drive assembly in a 5 1/4 inch disk drive form factor having two 3 1/2 inch disk drive form factor head-disk assemblies (HDA) internally mounted on a rigid frame and accessible via a common industry-standard interface connector is provided. Both the interface and power connectors and the frame mounting hole patterns are industry standard to provide interchangeability with 5 1/4 inch form factor disk drives provided by manufacturers for use in computer systems. A single electronics controller board is shared by both HDAs and is mounted on the bottom side of the frame below the HDAs. The controller board may implement SCSI or IPI interfaces in either differential or single-ended versions. A spring vibration damper is utilized to minimize external vibration and shock effects on the HDAs and also to minimize the effects of vibration internally generated by one HDA on the adjacent HDA. The assembly is fully enclosed with metal top and bottom covers to provide separate enclosures for the HDAs and the controller board cooling and to provide EMC and RFI protection.

    Abstract: A disk cartridge containing a flexible record disk has a single internal spring loaded shutter for opening and closing a head access port adjacent a spindle access member in one face of the cartridge. A further aperture allows the shutter to be actuated to an open position as the cartridge is loaded into a playing position on a disk drive. The shutter also holds the disk against movement within the cartridge when it is not in use on the drive.

    Abstract: CARTRDIGE LOADING MECHANISM Disk record/playback apparatus (Figures 2 and 3) including a disk drive motor (38) and spindle assembly for interchangeably receiving one of a number of identical disk cartridges (5) each of which contains a recording disk. The apparatus having a pivoted receptacle (3) movable by an operator from a loading station (Figure 2), at which a cartridge may be inserted to a record/playback station (Figure 3) at which a loaded cartridge is located with its encloseddisk mounted for rotation on the spindle assembly. The receptacle having a latch mechanism (6) for engaging a cartridge upon insertion and retaining the loaded cartridge therein against spring pressure as it is moved between loading and record/playback stations. The apparatus including a locating device (10) at the record/playback station onto which a loaded cartridge is accurately positioned and held by a clamp (36) as it is moved into the record/playback station. A loaded cartridge being automatically unlatched and ejected from the receptacle by the spring pressure as a result of overshot movement of the receptacle past the loading station as it is returned by the operator from the record/playback station.

    Abstract: A disk file comprises a disk stack subassembly and a head positioning actuator each mounted on opposite sides of a central box frame. The disk stack subassembly has a non-rotating central spindle and an in-hub electric motor whose stator is mounted on the spindle. The rotor of the motor is mounted internally of a hub supported for rotation about the spindle by two bearings at opposite ends of the spindle. A stack of disks is mounted externally on the hub. The box frame is open to one side and the opposite ends of the stationary spindle are located and fixed in the frame so that the disk stack subassembly spans the open side. Because of the symmetry and rigidity of the design, susceptibility to thermal or vibration induced misregistration is reduced. Finally a cover completes the enclosure.
