Abstract:
Information items are selected by permutative positioning of a group of adjacent two-position slide members. The slide members are characterized by their compact arrangement of blocking and passing code portions which cooperate with both of two adjacent information transmission channels. The compactness of the system, achieved by the code portion arrangement, is accompanied by some loss in code set efficiency as to the number of outputs selectable from a permutation of a given order; however, certain unique and repetitive patterns exist by which reasonable efficiency can be achieved.
Abstract:
A system for uniformally expanding a proportionally spaced character display in order to properly align the smallest characters of the character set without affecting the proportional relationship of the characters in the character set. An extra vertical scan line is added to the displayed characters at an escapement increment determined by the character of the character set requiring the greatest proportion of scan line expansion per character width in order to achieve proper character definition. Those characters requiring an additional unit of escapement to be properly defined utilize the added vertical scan lines and excess added vertical scan lines are distributed in the ''''white space'''' between characters. The added display columns have the same affect as increasing the number of scans per unit of character escapement.

1,250,835. Justifying type. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 10 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 18417/69. Heading B6W. Apparatus for justifying lines of text of different predetermined lengths, by punching a tape to control a line-casting machine and also producing a printed copy of the text, includes means for reading an original tape, input storage means for the data (character identity, character width and spaces) associated with a line, means for storing a plurality of line length measures and selecting one of such measures (e.g. 1 column or ¢ column), means for computing the unjustified total width of the characters in a line, according to which total the requisite measure is selected, means for counting the number of spaces, means for calculating the width of the spaces in a justified line, and means for transferring the data to output means for transmission to the punches and the printer.
