Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a web server to indicate which device, user, software and network property can be used to generate individual contents for a request side user and to make the web side indicate which property is actually required for it to generate meaningful contents. SOLUTION: When the user selects a link annotated by PROFILEATTRS attributes, browser software decides the set of requested properties to be provided, then generates a request for a linked document and buries the properties of the selected set in the request. At the time of deciding which of the requested properties is to be provided, a client may inquire the user asking for confirmation that the information can be publicized depending on cases. It is especially appropriate when it is considered that the requested client property requires secrecy.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for exchanging supplemental information fields between a client and server. This supplemental information can then be used by the server to complete a client's request for content stored at a particular location. For example, the supplemental information may be used to provide a customized response, or for access control to sensitive data. Preferably, the REDIRECT message of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) or the Wireless Session Protocol (WSP) is used to request the supplemental information, encoding a comma-separated list of attribute names in a request header for the desired supplemental information. This solution is designed to be backward-compatible.

Abstract: Methods, systems and computer program products are provided which provide profile information associated with a client to a server by generating, at the client, a profile document containing profile information associated with the client and incorporating in the profile document a designator which indicates that profile information identified by the designator is not provided by the client and is provided by a network intermediary in a path between the client and the server. The designator in the profile document is encrypted utilizing a key associated with the client and the profile document with the encrypted designator transmitted from the client to the server utilizing the path. Method, systems and computer program products corresponding to the network intermediaries are also provided.

Abstract: A method or system for designating required device attributes in a world wide web document request comprises having a link element or tag (341, figure 5a) associated with a plurality of requested client properties (345, figure 5a), on selecting said link inserting at least one of the properties into the http request. The requested client properties may be contained within an attribute (344, figure 5a) of the link tag. The property may comprise a category (346, figure 5a), separator and name (347, figure 5a) and contain wildcards (353, figure 5b). Some properties may be mandatory (377, figure 5c) for the document to be processed. The client may also decide whether to transmit the property and may be optionally queried for permission before transmission. The system allows customised content to be generated to suit different devices while saving network bandwidth by only transmitting properties that the server actually needs.

Abstract: A method for exchanging one or more supplemental fields between a client and a server comprises receiving a client request 405 for a URL, and determining whether the server can complete the request 410. If the server cannot complete the request but another server can, a Redirect message 435 is returned to the client specifying a different URL associated with a different server. A supplemental information request 437 is sent to the client if any of the supplemental information fields are required before completing the client request. If a predetermined number of events to obtain the supplemental field are unsuccessful, or if no server can complete the request, an error message 425 is returned to the client.
