Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for reading information from an information storage medium by using a reading channel including a data cache. SOLUTION: An analog waveform carrying information is generated, the analog waveform is provided to the reading channel, and a digital signal is generated from the analog waveform by using one or more than one first operating parameters. According to the method, an error of the digital signal is corrected at a real error correction rate and it is decided whether or not the real error correction rate is larger than a threshold of the error correction rate. When the real error correction rate exceeds the threshold of the error correction rate, the method is that the digital signal is fetched, the fetched data are stored in the data cache, the digital signal is read from the cache, one or more than one second operating parameters are generated and one or more than one second operating parameters are provided to the reading channel. Abstract: A method and apparatus (100) to read information from an information storage medium (360) using a read channel, where that read channel includes a data cache (403). The invention generates an analog waveform comprising the information, and provides (1005) that analog waveform to read channel, and generates (1025) a digital signal from that analog waveform using one or more first operating parameters. The method error corrects that digital signal at an actual error correction rate, and determines (1040) if the actual error correction rate is greater than an error correction rate threshold. If the actual error correction rate exceeds the error correction rate threshold, then the method captures (1060) the digital signal, stores (1070) that captured data in a data cache (403), reads (l080) that digital signal from the cache (403), generates (l090) one or more second operating parameters, and provides (1095) those one or more second operating parameters to the read channel. Thereafter, the method uses those one or more second operating parameters to read the information from the information storage medium.
