PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external storage device for restoring failure. SOLUTION: Each of a plurality of storage devices connected to each other through communication paths to form circular first paths is operable to invalidate a connection to a first preliminary communication path being a communication path of the first paths for performing communication, and is provided with a first connecting part having a first input part and a first output part and a second connecting part having a second output part and a second input part which are respectively connected to the first input part and the first output part of the external storage device adjacent on the first paths to form part of the first paths. When both connecting parts are valid, pieces of information received by the first input part and the second input part are respectively transmitted from the second output part and the first output part. When any connecting part is invalid, the information received by the input part of the valid connecting part is transmitted from the output part of the connecting part. When the failure of any communication path on the first paths is detected, the connection to the first preliminary communication path is validated, and the connection to the communication path whose failure is detected is invalidated. SOLUTION: This external storage device is provided with: a first input/ output part and a second input/output part for inputting/outputting information with the outside; a plurality of recording parts connected between the first input/output part and the second input/output part so that information transmission paths are serially connected; and a switching control part for selecting the two adjacent parts from the first input/output part, each of the recording parts, and the second input/output part to define a boundary, and for making the recording part positioned more closely to the first input/output part than the boundary communicate with the outside by using the first input/output part, and making the recording part positioned more closely to the second input/output part than the boundary communicate with the outside by using the second input/output part. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit transition from an ordinary power-on state to a power- saving mode that a user does not desire by the power-saving function of a personal computer and to make the power-saving function easier to use. SOLUTION: A computer system which enters power-saving mode unless there is user input from a keyboard, etc., for a certain time uses a circuit which detects writing to a video memory and a power source management control program which performs power-source management in cooperation with the said circuit. When the video memory is written, the shift to the power-saving mode is inhibited even if there is no input from the keyboard, etc., for the certain time.

SOLUTION: In a controller 16 of a tape drive, if a command processing part 61 receives a data read instruction, a channel input/output part 63 reads data from a tape, Ram-count showing the number of times that the tape is mounted for reading is stored in each data on the tape, and Dm-readfreq showing the history of the number of data reads is stored in the read data. In data migration, a CM input/output part 64 reads the Ram-count and Dm-readfreq, a frequency calculation part 65 calculates the ratio of the number of times shown by Dm-readfreq to the Ram-count as access frequency, and a migration control part 66 controls a buffer management part 62 or the like so that the data read from the migration source tape can be recorded in the order of access frequency into the migration destination tape. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved power management device and method for a personal computer. SOLUTION: In a computer system shifting to a power saving mode when there is no user input from a keyboard and the like for a fixed period of time, a circuit detecting writing to a video memory and a power management controlling program for controlling power cooperating with the circuit are used. When writing to the video memory is detected, shifting to the power saving mode is prohibited even if there is no input from the keyboard and the like for the fixed period of time.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a host PC(personal computer) or peripheral equipment from being damaged electrically and to prevent data from being destroyed. SOLUTION: The host PC 410 has a slot 412 into which a memory card C420 is inserted. The memory card C420 when inserted into the slot 412 is electrically connected to the host PC 410. The host PC 410 has on its internal nonvolatile memory an electricity feeding capacity ID indicating the maximum value of a current that can be supplied to connected peripheral equipment. Further, the memory card C420 has on its internal nonvolatile memory a maximum current consumption ID showing a maximum current value needed for operation.
