Abstract: This invention relates to personal computers, and more particularly to personal computers having a connector assembly with an integral retainer enabling resistance to disconnection which would interfere with continued operation of the computer. A particular configuration of card edge connector is provided, and a mating cable end connector is provided with latches which engage and grip undercut portions of recesses adjacent the card edge connector.

Abstract: A PERSONAL COMPUTER SYSTEM UNIT HAS A PLANAR CARD UPON WHICH IS MOUNTED A PROCESSOR CARD. THE PROCESSOR HAS MOUNTED THEREON THOSE COMPONENTS, EXCEPT FOR SYSTEM MEMORY, WHICH ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE REPLACED FOR A SYSTEM UPGRADE. THE PROCESSOR CARD HAS A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD WITH PRINTED CIRCUITS THEREON THAT TERMINATE ALONG ONE EDGE AT CONTACTS. TWO ALIGNED EDGE CONNECTORS ARE MOUNTED ON THE PLANAR BOARD. ONE CONNECTOR HAS A KEY WHICH ENGAGES A SLOT ON THE EDGE OF THE PROCESSOR CARD TO ALIGN THE MANY CONTACTS WITH CONTACT ARMS. TWO LEVERS ARE MOUNTED ON THE CARD AND COORPERATED WITH FRAME ELEMENTS TO INSERT, EXTRACT AND LATCH THE PROCESSOR CORD. EACH ELEMENT ALSO HAS A GUIDE TO ALIGN THE PROCESSOR CARD FOR INSERTION INTO THE EDGE CONNECTORS. (FIGURE 3)

Abstract: IN A PERSONAL COMPUTER, A PORTION OF THE FRAME THROUGH WHICH CONNECTIONS ARE MADE BETWEEN EACH I/O FEATURE CARD WITHIN THE FRAME A PERIPHERAL DEVICE EXTERNAL TO THE FRAME IS FORMED OF POLYCARBONATE AND PLATED INTERNALLY WITH COPPER AND NICKEL TO PROVIDE AN ENHANCED A.C. GROUND STRUCTURE, COUPLED TO PROCESSOR SIGNAL GROUND VIA A CAPACITOR. A.C. GROUND IS AT GROUND POTENTIAL FOR ALTERNATING CURRENTS OF HIGH ENOUGH FREQUENCY TO RADIATE. A.C. GROUND MAY BE AT ANY DIRECT CURRENT POTENTIAL. THE OPENINGS THROUGH WHICH CONNECTIONS ARE MADE HAVE U-SHAPED CHANNEL SECTIONS, AND MATING I/O BRACKETS OF STAINLESS STEEL HAVE U-SHAPED CROSS SECTIONS AND ARE RECEIVED WITHIN THE CHANNEL SECTIONS. SPRING LOADED CONTACTS AROUND THE PERIPHERY OF THE BRACKETS ENGAGE AND MAKE ELECTRICAL CONTACT WITH THE ADJACENT SURFACES OF THE CHANNEL SECTIONS EVERY ONE-HALF INCH TO MINIMIZE ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION THROUGH THE OPENINGS IN THE FRAME.
