Abstract: This specification describes an accumulator for a key entry device which has a shift register buffer memory that holds a character entered from a keyboard. The accumulator performs computation on the data on punch cards used by the key entry device. These computations can include the addition or subtraction of data in two or more numeric fields to be punched on the same card to provide a total that is punched out in a third numeric field on that same card or can include the computation of a running or hash total of the same numeric field on a number of different cards forming a group or batch of cards. The accumulator comprises a counter for converting the ten numeric bits of the serial Hollerith code used in punching data onto cards to four parallel BCD bits used in performing addition or subtraction with the data, a buffer for storing the accumulated total in BCD and a plurality of single bit adders and registers for performing the addition on data to be added to or subtracted from the accumulated total.

Abstract: This specification describes a counter for measuring the output of a key entry operator. The counter totals the number of strokes the operator makes along with the number of cards produced by the operator and the number of errors made by the operator. The counter includes a shift register which stores in series the key stroke, card and error data described above. This register is synched with the key entry devices operating cycles so that data can be entered without interference with the machine operation.

Abstract: An improved word backspace circuit is provided for a key entry device having a shift register buffer memory that holds a character entered from the keyboard. As the operating position in the shift register buffer is backspaced toward the first character of a word, a logical operation is performed on each character of the record in a scanning operation that proceeds forward in the order that the characters of the record are entered in the buffer. In this forward scanning operation, each space is recognized and its occurrance is recorded in a latch. So long as the space is followed by at least one character position before the operating position in the buffer, the latch is reset and the backspace operation is continued to the next character position. When the space character position is followed immediately by the operating position, the latch is kept set to prevent a further backspace operation.
