Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method, a system and a device for managing a failed input-output adapter in a data processing system. SOLUTION: An operating system handler receives an instruction that one of a plurality of input-output adapters fails. The operating system handler checks an error log to decide which input-output adapter fails. When the operating system handier decides the failed input-output adapter, the handler disables the failed input-output adapter without powering down the data processing system and releases all pieces of allocated processing going to the failed input- output adapter. Next, a user is notified of the failed input-output adapter so that the user can replace the failed input-output adapter. The input-output adapter can be replaced with a new input-output adapter without powering down the data processing system. When the failed input-output adapter is replaced, the new input-output adapter is enabled.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for updating partition firmware in a logical partitioned data processing system. SOLUTION: A first module in the partition firmware for a partition in a partition set is loaded. The first module provides an interface to receive calls from an operating system in the partition. In addition, a second module in the partition firmware for the partition is loaded. The second module is loaded by the first module, and the second module provides a plurality of functions. Calls received in the interface of the first module are routed to the second module, and the second module responds to the calls to execute the functions. While the second original module continues the execution, a new second module can be loaded. After that, the original second module is terminated, and then the new second module begins the execution. Abstract:
A METHOD, SYSTEM, AND APPARATUS FOR MANAGING A FAILED INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER WITHIN A DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM (100) IS PROVIDED. IN ONE EMBODIMENT, AN OPERATING SYSTEM HANDLER (204) RECEIVES AN INDICATION THAT ONE OF A PLURALITY OF INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTERS (222-228) HAS FAILED.THE OPERATING SYSTEM HANDLER CONSULTS AN ERROR LOG (300) TO DETERMINE WHICH INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER HAS FAILED. ONCE THE BAD INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER HAS BEEN DETERMINED, THE OPERATING SYSTEM HANDLER DISABLES THE BAD INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER AND DEALLOCATES ANY PROCESSES BOUND FOR THE BAD INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER WITHOUT POWERING DOWN THE DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM. A USER IS THEN NOTIFIED OF THE BAD INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER SO THAT THE BAD INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER CAN BE REPLACED. THE INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER MAY BE REPLACED WITHOUT POWERING DOWN THE DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM.ONCE THE BAD INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER HAS BEEN REPLACE, THE NEW INPUT/OUTPUT ADAPTER IS ENABLED.(FIG 1)
