Abstract: A toner concentration control system for an electrostatic copier wherein light is alternately reflected from multicomponent developer material containing toner and from a calibrated reflector to a photosensor. An imbalance of toner in the developer material results in a difference in reflected light intensity from the developer and reflector which is converted into an electrical signal having an AC component. A phase sensing circuit detects the position of the peak of the AC signal component with reference to the position of the calibrated reflector and provides a control signal to a toner replenishing device. Developer flow past the photosensor is intermittently halted during concentration sensing to reduce noise effects. A plurality of selectable calibrated reflectors provide different concentration settings. Additional concentration settings are obtained by varying the light spectrum emitted by the light source.

Abstract: INTERMEDIATE LAYER IN THERMAL TRANSFER MEDIUM In accordance with this invention a transfer medium for thermal printing is disclosed which has a very thin layer of silicon dioxide as a lamination on the resistive layer. A heat-flowable layer of marking material can be used on the side opposite the resistive layer. A typical embodiment has a resistive layer comprising a particulate, conductive filler material and a polymeric binder; a layer of silicon dioxide; a metal layer contacting the silicon dioxide opposite the resistive layer; and a solid, meltable ink on the other side of the metal layer. Abstract: THERMAL PRINTING WITH INK REPLENISHMENT A reinking thermal printer is disclosed having a continuous band 1 receiving ink lamination 23 from supply 21. Ink supply 21 has a lamination 25 which is stripped from the ink lamination 23 and directed through guide slot 43. Ink lamination 23 is transferred to band l at rolls 29 and 31. The reinked band 1 is then printed from by thermal printing element 7. Lamination 25 enters rolls 35 and 37 with its rough side encountering. the remaining ink on band 1 to effect cleaning. Lamination 25 is then stuffed in chamber 39.
