Abstract: An optical shaft encoder (10) achieves, by its construction, both axial and radial alignment. This is achieved by first securing to a housing (30) by a latch, a mounting plate (15) which is spaced a predetermined distance from the housing (30). A rotatable encoder disc (40), having a conically shaped hub (46) is placed in an aperture (36) in the housing (30). The assembly is pushed onto the motor shaft (12), and the disc (40) is secured to the shaft (12). Plate (15) is then attached to motor case (13) and housing (30) rotated. This moves housing (30) into an abutting relationship with plate (15) and spaces housing (30) the predetermined distance from disc (40) which is thus both axially and radially positioned.

Abstract: Deformities in electronic images produced by a multiple array scanner 10 are corrected by using the scanner to generate an electronic image of a reference pattern 62 disposed at the document platen of the scanner, storing that electronic image in a memory 72, producing skew, misalignment and misabutment signals by analysing the stored image and using the correction signals to produce a corrected electronic image of the reference pattern and to correct the electronic images of originals subsequently scanned by the scanner. The reference pattern consists of a horizontal line which is used to correct deformities in the images due to misalignment and skew associated with the arrays and a vertical line which is used to correct deformities in the images due to misabutment between the arrays. A pointer system 74, 76 associated with the memory is used to identify a sequence of locations in the memory.

Abstract: An illumination system of particular use in document copiers wherein an incandescent lamp which may be of the tungsten-halogen type is located at the focal point of a reflector shaped as a conic section such as elliptical cylinder, directing light rays toward an interference filter for separating the IR radiation and redirecting the IR rays back to the incandescent lamp for heating the lamp. Both cold mirror and hot mirror embodiments of the system are disclosed.

Abstract: A field replaceable encoder including a slotted housing (20) having a pair of passages (21, 22) therethrough essentially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the housing, is attachable to the frame (9) of a machine having a rotatable shaft (11) to which the encoder is to be mounted. Attached to the housing is an accurate stationary mask (50), the mask having slits (51, 52) which are aligned with the passages in the housing. The mask includes an accurately dimensioned aperture (53) for locating the mask, and thus the housing, on a bearing (12) on the rotatably mounted shaft. A pair of light sources (# 5, 36) and a pair of light detectors (41, 42) are mounted on opposite sides of the housing aligned with the passages and slits in the mask. A hub (65), to which is attached a rotating disc (60), is connected to the rotating shaft, the disc being mounted in the slotted housing so that interdigitated opaque and transparent portions (61, 62) align with the slits of the mask, and thus the light sources and light detectors.
