    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a recognition speed by sending a character that is not clearly recognized through supplementary recognition to a correction system, classifying the character and using the information to educate a supplementary recognition unit. SOLUTION: All characters that are classified by a primary recognition subsystem 1 which has lower reliability value than defined threshold is next sent to a supplementary recognition subsystem 3. A character (rejection) that is not recognized even by the subsystem 3 or is recognized mistakenly is next sent to a correction system 5, e.g. a video coding system. The rejected character is corrected manually in the correction system and the final result of character recognition is usually formed (arrow 6). Here, an additional pattern adaptation system 7 is arranged between the systems 5 and 3 and an input from the system 5 can be used for further education of the system 3 in a continuous process.

    Abstract: A novel system for recognition of patterns on presented item. A known recognition system expanded by a complementary recognition which is linked with the primary recognition. The results of the primary recognition which are not positively recognised are passed on to the complementary recognition and any characters not positively recognised by the complementary recognition are again passed on to a correction system. Here an operator classifies the unrecognised characters which are then used to teach the complementary recognition unit. Thus, the classified data of the correction system provide the training data for a continuous training process which is coupled with the correction system.

Thus, there are formed zonal features and anti-features having positive and negative feature factor values as well as incorporating different weighting factors. This system allows a fully automatic feature generation technique and allows training of new character classes in a very short time. For each meaning class the different shaped classes are generated by statistical means and the weighted zonal positive features are derived. Besides this in parallel there are weighted anti-features trained which increase the accuracy of classification substantially. The system of the present invention implements a classifier of high accuracy for recognition of for example characters with low print quality according to banking requirements.
