    Abstract: A method of automatically verifying a signature of an individual with a computer is described. A digitized image with a number of picture elements is established from the signature to be verified. Parameter values to be verified are calculated from this digitized image and are compared with corresponding reference parameter values which were calculated and stored previously. Depending on a comparison of the reference parameter values and the parameter values to be verified it is decided if the signature to be verified is true or false. Various possibilities are described for the calculation of significant parameters. The gravity-center of all densities of all rows and all columns of the digitized image is a parameter which can be used for a preselection. Centers-of-gravity, gravity lines, maximum values and maximum lines, etc. are further significant parameters. Parameters with a very high reliability can be generated by calculating second order polynomials which describe segments of the signature.

    Abstract: A novel system for recognition of patterns on presented item. A known recognition system expanded by a complementary recognition which is linked with the primary recognition. The results of the primary recognition which are not positively recognised are passed on to the complementary recognition and any characters not positively recognised by the complementary recognition are again passed on to a correction system. Here an operator classifies the unrecognised characters which are then used to teach the complementary recognition unit. Thus, the classified data of the correction system provide the training data for a continuous training process which is coupled with the correction system.

The device comprises at least two writing-recognition units (30, 40), an evaluation device (50) for evaluating the results produced by the writing-recognition units (30, 40) by means of a database (110) of rules for evaluating the sample recognized by the writing-recognition units (30, 40), a calculating device (50) for calculating the authenticity of each sample recognized by the writing-recognition units (30, 40) and a sample vector memory part (120) for storing the calculated authenticity. The authenticity is used by the evaluating device (50) to improve the evaluation results.
