Abstract: 1435846 Automatic control of printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 15 Feb 1974 [5 March 1973] 6902/74 Heading G3N A selective printer comprises a control means for a motor moving a type carrier adapted to vary the speed of the motor in accordance with variations in the value of a common source of energy for the control means and a hammer operating means so as to maintain registration between print hammers and type characters. As shown, an endless type-belt 12 carries type characters 16 on fingers 18 and is driven by a pulley 14 coupled to a stepping motor 30. A plurality of print hammers, such as 22, are electromagnetically actuated by windings 23 energized in timed relationship with marks 20 on the belt. as sensed by a photo-electric device 20 and controlled by a device 24. The motor 30 is stepped by pulses from a device 32. Since the flight-time of a print hammer is related to the voltage applied to the windings 23, the pulse rate of the pulses applied to the motor 30 is varied in correspondence by deriving the pulses from a relaxation oscillator, the charge/ discharge capacitor being fed through a voltage dependent transistor-diode circuit. A gradual initial start-up is provided by biasing the transistor by a ramp generator. The pulses are gated to the stepping-motor windings by a binary counter.

Abstract: A type belt having spaced apart type characters thereon, also has a plurality of timing marks, one for keeping track of the different character positions. A transducer is positioned to sense the timing marks as they move in a horizontal direction for operating print controls in timed relation with the positions of the type characters as they move along the print line and also detect differences in amplitude of the transducer output signals caused by vertical movement of the type belt. The output is used to operate indicating means which tells which position will print next, and which can also be used to enable the operator to detect misregistration of the type belt, so that the operator may correct it.

Abstract: 1325839 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 8 May 1972 [25 June 1971] 21317/72 Heading B6F [Also in Division H1] Hammer mechanism.-A print hammer actuator comprises a main three-legged magnetic core 12 having an operating winding 20 on a centre leg 16, and an armature 22 pivotally supported at 24 adjacent the lower leg 18 with an extension 28 at the other end producing a hammer face. A projection 26 on the armature 22 is opposite the middle leg 16 and moves within the winding 20. A secondary magnetic core 33 on the opposite side of the armature with a restore and damping winding 35 operates to damp oscillations. A spring 23 biases the armature 22 against the secondary magnetic core which is also pivoted at 24 so as to be adjustable with set screws 46 and 48. The third leg 34 of the secondary core 33 acts as the back stop.
