    Abstract: 1325839 Selective printing INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 8 May 1972 [25 June 1971] 21317/72 Heading B6F [Also in Division H1] Hammer mechanism.-A print hammer actuator comprises a main three-legged magnetic core 12 having an operating winding 20 on a centre leg 16, and an armature 22 pivotally supported at 24 adjacent the lower leg 18 with an extension 28 at the other end producing a hammer face. A projection 26 on the armature 22 is opposite the middle leg 16 and moves within the winding 20. A secondary magnetic core 33 on the opposite side of the armature with a restore and damping winding 35 operates to damp oscillations. A spring 23 biases the armature 22 against the secondary magnetic core which is also pivoted at 24 so as to be adjustable with set screws 46 and 48. The third leg 34 of the secondary core 33 acts as the back stop.

Contact bounce in a sealed magnetic reed contact unit is reduced by a stop 17 which is engaged by one of the reeds 10 as it moves towards the other one 11. This engagement causes reed 10 to rebound so that the reeds are moving in the same direction when they close. The reeds are made of a nickel-iron alloy and may be coated with contact material at their co-operating ends. The distance between the stop 17 and reed 10 is less than half the distance between reeds 10 and 11.

    Abstract: A switch contact is made from an amalgam of mercury and a suitable noble metal e.g. gold, silver or palladium. The percentage of gold may be 5.5, 9.3, 11.5, 13.3 or 17.3. Percentage of palladium may be 2.55, 3.70, 4.56 or 6.85, and of silver may be 5.5, 7.20, 9.70 or 14.33. Silver-palladium may be used in the following percentages, 7.20 per cent silver and 0.1 per cent palladium or 14.33 per cent silver and 0.1 per cent palladium.
