An illuminator, a liquid crystal display and a lamp socket in which a dark part, so-called angular irregularities, is improved. The illuminator comprises a light guide plate (28) including a light beam incidence face (46) and an emission face (46) for radiating a light beam from the incident face, a light source (30) including a light emitting part and a non-light emitting part disposed contiguously to the light guide plate (28) in order to irradiate it with a light beam, a lamp socket (34) for containing at least one end of the light source (30), and a reflector (32) extending along the light source (30)and reflecting the light beam from the light source (30). The lamp socket (34) scatters light having wavelength of 300-900 nm and has a transmittance of 20-90%. The invention also relates to a display comprising the aforementioned side light apparatus.

The present invention realizes the backlight apparatus which can generates t he light with an angle spread or an angle less than 10 degrees FWHM, which can reduce a fabrication cost, and which can improve the efficiency of usage of the light from the light source. A backlight apparatus comprises: a wedge type light guide of a refractive index n1, having a top surface, a bottom surface and a side surface; a light source for directing light to said side surface of said wed ge type light guide; a first light transmission layer of a refractive index n2, which is smaller than sai d refractive index n1, having a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein said top surface of said first light transmission layer is attached to said bottom surface of said wedge type light guide; and a light deflecting layer having a top surface attached to said bottom surface of said first light transmission layer for deflecting the incident light from said first light transmission layer towar d said top surface of said wedge type light guide.
