Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the delay of data access by processing data retrieving operation, which does not require performing of a first prescribed task, without performing the first prescribed task. SOLUTION: A queue manager 48 fetches a first job from the head of a list to decide whether making a watermark is required or not, etc., (S350). When a request does not require a watermark, the job is added to the job queue of a user within 'fast ring' whose processing operation to be performed is relatively faster than the making of the watermark (S410). When the making of a water mark is required, its processing job is added to the queue of a user in circularly linked 'slow ring' circularly linking jobs requiring the making of the watermark (S380). Consequently, this helps the improvement of assignment of resources to reduce delay to be encountered in the case of operation which is not processor intensive.

Abstract: Provided are apparatus and a method for establishing communications between a Web client computer in a vehicle and a Web server computer connected to the Internet or an intranet, initiated from a remote Web Browser. The Web Browser sends a request to the server, which invokes a process at the server causing a SMS message to be sent to a telephone connected to the client computer. This SMS message includes an identification of the server process (such as a URL) and causes the client computer to establish communications with the server. This allows the Browser to interact with the client computer via a standard Browser request without the overheads of security exposure of requiring the client to be a Web server. The invention is useful for allowing a remote Browser to interact with a computer controlling a vehicle's electronic control systems.

Abstract: A method and apparatus provide security for a network-connected vehicle (or other networked environment) in which a predefined set of permitted operations relating to protected resources can be initiated remotely from elsewhere in the network, while security is maintained for the protected resources (for example, an engine performance optimization control unit or air conditioning control unit within a vehicle) by preventing remote initiation of any other operations on a data processing unit which is connected to the protected resources. One of a pair of gateway components runs on each of two data processing units within the vehicle (or other environment), the first processing unit being connected to the vehicle's device control units and the second processing unit being connected to the external network. The gateway components control the types of communications which can be passed from the network-connected side to the first processing unit such that only permitted operations can be requested and no unauthorized operations can be initiated remotely.

Abstract: Provided are a system and a method for data retrieval which identify from requested data retrieval operations those operations which require a particular processing task to be performed, and then separate those operations from operations not requiring the processing task. The separated sets of tasks are queued separately for independent processing. This enables resource scheduling to be performed which avoids the operations which do not require performance of the task from having to wait for the operations which do require the task. This is an advantage where the task is a processor-intensive task such as digital watermarking of images. A particular resource allocation method includes enqueing the set of operations requiring the processing task in a circularly linked list and then employing a scheduler to implement a round-robin allocation of resources for each of the system users in turn. Also provided is a pre-fetch policy whereby sets of data objects are retrieved from a data repository for processing in response to data retrieval requests and post-retrieval processing such as watermarking is initiated before an individual data object in the set has been selected.
