    Abstract: PURPOSE: To refer to information on constitution or the like for respective sectors and to increase information quantity by permitting a hard disk controller to calculate an absolute block address to calculate a physical position in a specified zone and executing a seek operation based on the physical position. CONSTITUTION: The hard disk controller HDC 30 refers to a defect list D-LST and calculates the absolute block address ABA by all the sectors, which corresponds to a designated logic block address LBA. When a host computer requests the reading of the sectors from #L to #M in the address LBA, the absolute block address ABA is calculated to be #N. When the belonging zone Zn is set to be #Z, the min address ABA is to be MIN-ABBA(#Z) and a min cylinder is MIN-CYL(#Z), the address ABA is shown by an expression. Then, #ZN is set to be the serial numbers of the sectors. The head is switched and the seek operation is executed based on the physical position which is thus calculated.

    Abstract: A disk drive apparatus comprising a disk recording medium in which each track is divided into a servo area which stores information for identifying the track position and a plurality of data sectors wherein at least one of said data sectors crosses said servo area and a look-up table is provided for identifying the position of each sector based upon the relationship between a physical sector identifier, said position information and the capacity of the sector crossing said servo area. When a signal SP at the end of a servo area is detected in a dead state 80 during start up, a first data state 84 for the start of a sector transits to a second data state 86 for the later region of the sector being divided in accordance with the capacity stored in a current sectors pointer register 60. At the beginning of the sector, the contents of a next sectors pointer register 62 is stored in register 60 and the contents of a next sectors operation register 66 is stored in a current sectors operation register 64. Upon completion of sector processing, the first data state 84 is maintained when the next sector is contiguous. When a terminate instruction is stored in register 64, the process moves to dead state 80. When the servo area arrives, the process moves to idle state 82. Responsive to this state, the magnetic head is activated to enable read and write operation 5 for sectors having no sector ID on the disk.

    Abstract: A disk drive having embedded servo information accesses data without using sector identifier recorded in each sector. When a signal sector pulse signal (SP) at the end of a servo area is detected in a dead state during start up, a first data state for the start of a sector transits to a second data state for the litter region of the sector being divided in accordance with the capacity stored in a current sector's pointer register. At the beginning of the sector, the contents of a next sector's pointer register is stored in current sector's pointer register and the contents of a next sector's operation register is stored in a current sector's operation register. Upon completion of sector processing, the first data state is maintained when the next sector is contiguous. When a terminate instruction is stored in current sector's operation register, the process moves to dead state. When the servo area arrives, the process moves to idle state. Responsive to this state, the magnetic head is activated to enable read and write operation for sectors having no sector identifier on the disk.
