    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a physical memory management system which has free space for storing the contents being held in a compressed form and organized as pages. SOLUTION: The system includes a control apparatus for managing performance of input-output operation of the compressed contents between memory storage devices. Output operation includes memory page-out operation for recovering a free memory storage space. The control apparatus maintains an immediately usable free storage space for recovery to an amount over thresholds so as to perform the page-out operation. A new data structure including position of the page that can be cleared immediately from a physical memory for the page-out operation is provided. The control apparatus accesses the data structure for performing flush operation and conveniently deletes pages more than one identified as being deletable on the list. Based on the data structure and flush operation, the amount of the thresholds for recovering the free storage space is greatly reduced.

    Abstract: A method and service creates and maintains a virtual point-in-time copy of source data stored within a source storage unit. The method/service receives at least one request to create a point-in-time copy of the source data. However, instead of creating a copy of the source data, the invention creates a target storage unit mapping table within a target storage unit or other storage units managed by the same storage system. This target storage unit mapping table contains pointers to the source data. In addition, the invention maintains a modification space within the target storage unit or other storage units managed by the same storage system. Each portion of the modification space is associated with a given target storage unit. The modification space only stores changes to the source data that are unique to the corresponding target storage unit. The target storage unit mapping table is modified as the data is written to the modification space by redirecting corresponding pointers in the target storage unit mapping table from the source data to the modification space.

    Abstract: A system and method for managing a memory storage device including a physical memory having free space for storing content maintained in compressed form and organized as pages. The system includes a control device for managing performance of input and output operations of compressed content to and from the memory storage device, with output operations including a memory pageout operations for recovering free memory storage space. The control device maintains an amount of free storage space readily available for recovery to above a threshold amount so as to enable subsequent pageout operations to be performed. A novel data construct is provided that includes locations of pages which may be immediately cleared from the physical memory for a subsequent pageout operation, the control device performing a flush operation by accessing the data construct and expediently deleting one or more pages identified in the list as available for deletion. With this data construct and flush operation, the threshold amount for free storage space recovery can be significantly reduced.
