    Abstract: An optical adaptor OA monolithically integrates optical elements OE and first micro-mechanical features which define at least a first horizontal reference surface HP and a first vertical reference surface VP, wherein, said first horizontal reference surface HP is perpendicular to an optical plane, the latter being perpendicular the optical axis of said optical elements OF; and said first vertical reference surface VP is perpendicular to said first horizontal reference surface HP and parallel to said optical axis. Alignment of the elements may thereby be achieved. The optical elements may be a lens array and a mirror. The adaptor may be used for connecting to a photonic chip with a waveguide. The adaptor may also have second horizontal and vertical reference surfaces (CVP, CHP, Fig 5c).

    Abstract: Aligning optical components with optical waveguides according to a common optical axis is done by an optical component assembly OCA, an adapter ADP and a waveguide assembly WGA. The OCA has optical components and a first alignment structure of a cavity (SC, figure 1) which is associated with the substrate of the OCA. The ADP presents a base surface BS with a first step structure S1. The WGA has a second alignment structure comprising a distinct step structure S3 designed according to the position of the waveguides within the waveguides assembly. The OCA, WGA and the ADP are positioned so that a sidewall of the cavity and the distinct step structure S3 are in contact with a sidewall of the first step structure SI. A second step structure S2 may also be provided.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing, within a process flow including several stages, including direct laser writing involving polymerization by two-photon absorption, a three dimensional photonic device integrating at least two distinct micro-optical components 4, having respectively two optical functions. The components are aligned with each other so that optical signals can be transmitted from one of the components to the other. The distinct components are built at a same stage of said process flow in order to improve their relative alignment. The components may have a concave shape such as a micro lens. Manufacturing may be performed by hybrid direct laser writing, using laser writing beam 5 for one-photon absorption to produce a two dimensional waveguide 3 and laser writing beam 6 for two photon absorption producing three dimensional components 4. Two photon absorption polymerization may use light of infrared or visible wavelengths and the one photon absorption may use ultraviolet light.
