Abstract: A system for deflecting a light beam such as a laser beam including a crystal substrate, preferably piezoelectric, having a reflective coating on its surface which functions as a mirror. At least one surface acoustic wave transducer is mounted on the crystal and is actuated by a high-frequency signal source. The transducer propagates surface acoustic waves on the crystal, which produce a periodic deformation on the mirror surface which functions as a phase grating. A light beam directed onto the mirror surface will therefore be deflected at an angle dependent on the acoustic frequency of the surface waves. A plurality of transducers arranged approximately in a semicircle on the crystal and selectively actuated provides a two-dimensional scanning system.

Abstract: An injection laser whose light output is spatially modulated by internal effects in the active region of the laser. An acoustic wave is launched into the laser and is existent only in a small area including the active region of the laser. In low acoustic frequency operation, the acoustic wave is steered over an angle theta to cause the laser light output to be steered through this angle. In high frequency operation, the frequency of the acoustic wave can be changed to steer the light output, or the acoustic wave can be steered to cause light deflection, as in the low frequency case. The acoustic wave causes phase modulation and loss modulation which results in scanning of the light output. The acoustic wave can be a surface acoustic wave, a Love wave, or a Stonley wave.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact head mounted virtual image display unit in which an optical system equipped with a distinct see-through function is incorporated. SOLUTION: The optical system includes a microminiaturized display device, a beam split prism, a field lens, a diverging lens, a reflecting lens and a 1/4 wavelength plate. A picture signal linearly polarized by following the microminiaturized display device passes through the field lens and the diverging lens (a), is made incident on the beam split prism and passes through the polarization plane thereof (b), passes through the 1/4 wavelength plate and is circularly polarized (c), is reflected on the surface of the reflecting lens and passes through the 1/4 wavelength plate again, and in linearly polarized in a polarization direction rotated by 90 deg. with an original linear polarization direction related to the picture signal as reference (d), and is made incident on the beam split prism again, reflected on the polarization plane thereof and emitted from the beam split prism as seen by a user (e).

A sliding light shield may be incorporated for those instances when see-through capability is not desired. A focus adjustment may be incorporated to permit the focusing of the image, fo r example, at a distance of approximately 18 inches to infinity. An adjustable headband may be incorporated that adapts to fit the users head. A flexible boom structure may be incorporated to facilitate fine positional adjustment of the optical assembly. A slider and ball joint mechanism may al so be incorporated to facilitate positional adjustment of the optical assembly. A built-in microphone may be incorporated to enable speech input by the user. The head mounted virtual image display unit may be used comfortably in conjunction with eye or safety glasses, and provides a useful image to the user without blocking his view of the surrounding environment. The unit is design ed to have a pleasing appearance so as to greatly enhance user acceptability.

Abstract: COMPLEX CHARACTER GENERATOR A character compaction and generation method and apparatus which is particularly adapted to the generation of complex characters such as Kanji characters. A dot matrix defining a given character is compacted into a sparse matrix, with the original character being reconstructed for printing or display from the compacted character defined in the sparse matrix. Each character in the complex character set is compacted and stored in memory one time only, with decompaction being performed each time a given character is to be generated. A set of symbols are defined to represent different patterns which occur frequently in the entire complex character set. Different combinations of the symbols define a given character. The information stored for each sparse matrix representing a given character is comprised of each symbol in the sparse matrix, its position, and its size parameter if the symbol represents a family of patterns which differ only in size. Three groups of different patterns are defined which occur frequently in the complex character set, namely, a first group which has a fixed size for each pattern, a second group which has one size parameter which must be specified for each pattern, and a third group which has a plurality of size parameters which must be specified for each pattern. Certain ones of the characters have elements of different patterns which overlap, such that the character may be encoded utilizing less symbols, and accordingly less bytes of data.
