    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact head mounted virtual image display unit in which an optical system equipped with a distinct see-through function is incorporated. SOLUTION: The optical system includes a microminiaturized display device, a beam split prism, a field lens, a diverging lens, a reflecting lens and a 1/4 wavelength plate. A picture signal linearly polarized by following the microminiaturized display device passes through the field lens and the diverging lens (a), is made incident on the beam split prism and passes through the polarization plane thereof (b), passes through the 1/4 wavelength plate and is circularly polarized (c), is reflected on the surface of the reflecting lens and passes through the 1/4 wavelength plate again, and in linearly polarized in a polarization direction rotated by 90 deg. with an original linear polarization direction related to the picture signal as reference (d), and is made incident on the beam split prism again, reflected on the polarization plane thereof and emitted from the beam split prism as seen by a user (e).

    Abstract: This printing apparatus and technique incorporates a color transfer station to impart a desired color to a fusible ink layer on a ribbon. The color transfer station is located between a supply reel providing the ribbon for printing, and the location where actual printing occurs. This color transfer technique is particularly suitable for use in resistive ribbon thermal transfer printing, where economical use of the ribbon is mandatory. A sliding light shield may be incorporated for those instances when see-through capability is not desired. A focus adjustment may be incorporated to permit the focusing of the image, fo r example, at a distance of approximately 18 inches to infinity. An adjustable headband may be incorporated that adapts to fit the users head. A flexible boom structure may be incorporated to facilitate fine positional adjustment of the optical assembly. A slider and ball joint mechanism may al so be incorporated to facilitate positional adjustment of the optical assembly. A built-in microphone may be incorporated to enable speech input by the user. The head mounted virtual image display unit may be used comfortably in conjunction with eye or safety glasses, and provides a useful image to the user without blocking his view of the surrounding environment. The unit is design ed to have a pleasing appearance so as to greatly enhance user acceptability.

    Abstract: RESISTIVE RIBBON THERMAL TRANSFER PRINTING SYSTEM AND PROCESS A technique and structure for resistive ribbon thermal transfer printing including a separate resistive ribbon and transfer ribbon therefor is illustrated. The resistive ribbon is used only for the generation of heat and is placed in contact with a separate transfer ribbon including a very thin carrier ribbon coated with ink. A moveable electrode printhead generates a heat pattern along the resistive ribbon and this pattern is compressed along the direction of printing by means of printhead motion v1. The resistive ribbon is moved relative to the transfer ribbon at a velocity v2 so as to generate a heat flow in the transfer ribbon corresponding to the pattern required for normal printing. The ink is melted and is transferred from the transfer ribbon to the paper.

    Abstract: An improved technique and apparatus for color-on-demand resistive ribbon printing is provided in which selected colored ink layers are transferred to a resistive printing ribbon from a color-bearing ribbon, prior to resistive ribbon printing. The color ribbon and the resistive printing ribbon both contain ink layers, the only difference being that the ink layer in the printing ribbon is preferrably uncolored. When the ink layers on the two ribbons are brought into contact with one another and heated, the ink layers will become tacky and will adhere to one another. The temperatures of these ink layers are then reduced and the printing ribbon and the color ribbon are separated from one another to cause the colored ink layer on the color ribbon to separate from that ribbon and adhere to the printing ribbon, thus causing a transfer of the colored ink layer to the printing ribbon. After this, the resistive printing ribbon can be used to print colors.
