Abstract: A disk drive reads and writes information on a flexible magnetic disk stored in a rigid disk cartridge (8). The drive contains apparatus for loading and registering the cartridge in the drive without the assistance of a loading tray or cartridge carrier. A disk drive spindle (16), recording head (18) and cartridge position registration pins (42A) all protrude into the insertion path for the cartridge above support edges (41). The spindle and pins are shaped and positioned so that the cartridge will not strike the recording head as it is inserted. Spring-biased plates (40) bias the cartridge down against the spindle and the registration pins. When the cartridge is fully inserted, it snaps into a registered position on the edges (41) over the pins, the spindle and the recording head.

Abstract: A square hard-cartridge diskette, housing a two-sided floppy disk, is constructed and arranged to be symmetrical about a diagonal axis (60), such that the diskette is oriented for use of one disk side, or the other, by rotating the cartridge 180 DEG about this diagonal axis. The diskette carries locating notches (25, 26, 125, 126) and polarizing edges (11, 111) which operate, respectively, to properly locate the diskette within a using disk drive, and to prevent improper insertion of the diskette into the disk drive. The locating notches and polarizing edges are located symmetrically relative this diagonal axis. Head-access openings and disk cleaning members are located on this diagonal axis.

Abstract: During a search operation in a rotating magnetic head tape transport, the tape is transported from a supply spool via guides and a vacuum column past the rotating head read/write station to a take-up spool. As the tape is wound onto the take-up spool in layer-by-layer convolutions, air is entrapped between the layers. The entrapped air forms a layer of air film and as a result the tape is loosely wound on the take-up spool. A "Hard Step" voltage is generated and is applied to the capstan motor at the end of the search operation to tighten any loose wraps caused by the air entrapment during the search.
