Abstract: An elongated magnetic tape has a pair of longitudinally extending servo track areas, one of which is closer to the longitudinal center of the tape than the other. The lateral space intermediate the servo areas receives data signals, while the space between said one servo area and one edge contains identification and address signals. The tape is particularly adapted for use with rotating head recorders having two gaps on the rotor, with an intergap distance slightly greater than the lateral extent of the servo areas. A recording or write gap precedes an immediately trailing reading or recovery gap. When the rotor gaps pass the one edge in the one servo area, the write gap senses the servo track; while the read gap senses the identification signals. The arrangement is such that prior to the time the write gap reaches the data recording area, the read gap has sensed the identification signals. In a similar manner, when the gaps are leaving the data signal area, the write gap is sensing the other servo area; while the read gap is still sensing data. The longitudinal extent of the servo areas indicates, respectively, beginning of tape (BOT) and end of tape (EOT). A leader portion includes a magnetic coating for facilitating calibrating magnetic recording apparatus to each particular article.

Abstract: Transducer head to data track alignment is corrected in a helical scan rotating head magnetic tape unit by displacing the head in a direction perpendicular to the direction of rotation of the head under the control of an error signal indicative of misalignment between the head and a desired data track. The error signal is generated in response to the sensing by the head of a longitudinal servo track record defining the locations of oblique data tracks. Displacement of the head is effected by mounting the head on a piezoelectric actuator controlled by the error signal. By successively sensing a series of longitudinal servo track records on the tape, alignment of the head with an oblique data track is repeatedly corrected as the head scans the data track. In this manner the head is caused to follow a skewed of deformed data track.

Abstract: 1530099 Automatic control INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 25 April 1977 [3 May 1976] 17185/77 Heading G3N A magnetic reader, particularly a reader having a rotating head for reading an oblique track on a stationary tape wound on a helical mandrel, is provided with an arrangement for moving the tape to compensate for a skewed track. The arrangement is initiated by failure after a succession of passes, to read the track and the tape is moved by an offset distance 116 during a non-transducing position of the head travel and returned by steps along a transducing path 35' to read the skewed data track. Facilities can be provided for calling-up one of a plurality of offset distances and a variable number of de-skewing pulses.

Abstract: An incremental belt transport device with adaptive gain control and a rotating head magnetic tape unit, comprising: a take-up reel; a motor functionally connected to rotate said reel; a supply of tape; rotary means in cooperation with a stretch of tape running between said supply and said take-up reel, following a transverse or lateral path of travel across the width of said stretch of tape; said tape having a plurality of data tracks distributed at intervals and having servo-control rates for at least certain tracks; transducer means capable of operating by reading said servo-control indices in order to determine the lack of alignment of said rotary means with its data tracks; means for generating an advance order or tape step; means for detecting the excess of stroke and the defect or shortness of stroke of the engine; means for comparing the excess and defect of stroke with a predetermined threshold value; and means for adjusting the motor gain to minimize motor oscillation. Abstract: A data recorder/reader provides forward/backward compatibility with record members of similar physical characteristics, but differing data record track densities. In a rotating head, helical tape recorder/reader, a single head 16 has a wide write gap 17 followed by a pair of aligned half width read gaps 18 and 19. During recording at high track density, the tape is stepped between recordings by drive 27 under the control of half step circuit 29 for a distance equal to half the width W2 of the write gap and to the width W1 of each read gap. During recording at low track density, the tap is stepped between recordings by drive 27 under the control of whole step circuit 28 for a distance equal to the width W2 of the write gap. Switching between circuits 28 and 29 is effected by pole 54 of switch S1. During read back at high density, two adjacent tracks are sensed simultaneously by read gaps 18 and 19. Signals are fed back to individual read back circuits 31 and 37, those from the first read gap 18 being passed through switch 43 to data circuit 33 for immediate processing. Signals from the second read gap 19 are passed to a buffer 39 and buffered until a dead time occurs when no data is being sensed. The switch 43 is then operated to direct the buffered signals to data circuit 33 for processing. Between read backs, the tap is stepped by drive 27 under the control of whole step circuit 28 for a distance equal to the width W2 of the write gap. Circuit 28 is selected through pole 54 of switch S1 and pole 49 of switch S2. During read back at low track density, a single wide track is sensed simultaneously by read gaps 18 and 19. Signals from the first read gap 18 are processed immediately. Signals from the second read gap 19 may be inhibited or buffered for later processing in data circuit 33 in the event of error correction being required. Between read backs, the tape is stepped for a distance equal to the width W2 of the write gap.

Abstract: During a search operation in a rotating magnetic head tape transport, the tape is transported from a supply spool via guides and a vacuum column past the rotating head read/write station to a take-up spool. As the tape is wound onto the take-up spool in layer-by-layer convolutions, air is entrapped between the layers. The entrapped air forms a layer of air film and as a result the tape is loosely wound on the take-up spool. A "Hard Step" voltage is generated and is applied to the capstan motor at the end of the search operation to tighten any loose wraps caused by the air entrapment during the search.
