    Abstract: A toner usage sensing system for an electrostatic reproduction apparatus which utilizes multicomponent developer material including electrostatically charged toner to develop electrostatic latent images on a photosensitive plate directly senses the amount of toner consumed by the reproduction process. Since the average toner body charge (coulomb/gram) is constant for a given desired toner concentration, the weight of the electrostatically charged toner consumed in sensed by measuring the charge removed from the developer material during the reproduction process. The developer unit containing the developer material is electrically isolated from the remainder of the reproduction apparatus and grounded through a single connection. The current in the ground connection returns charge to the developer unit sufficient to replace the charge removed and is sensed to obtain a measurement of the toner consumed. A measured amount of toner is added to the developer material when a preselected amount of charge has been sensed as being removed. In one embodiment, a DC motor drives the toner replenisher and rotates an amount proportional to the sensed current thereby providing a mechanical storage of the incremental amounts of toner removed on widely spaced reproduction runs.

    Abstract: Documents are automatically recirculated for copying by a copier from a stack which is accessed top document downward. Documents are stacked faceup in an upper tray and moved as a group to a lower tray where they are stacked facedown, with the first document in the upper tray appearing in a facedown position at the bottom of the lower tray. The top document in the lower tray is then removed for copying and returned to the bottom of the upper tray, thus peserving the original document order for further copying. The copier normally scans stationary documents placed on a glass platen; for example, individual sheets of paper or book pages may be placed on the glass platen and held stationary while the optics causes light to scan the page. During automatic recirculation of stacks of the documents, however, the scanning optics is "parked" and documents removed from the lower tray are imaged while scanned past a fixed exposure area on the glass platen on the way back to the upper tray.

    Abstract: Cleaning apparatus for cleaning the residual toner image from an electrostatic plate of an electrostatic reproduction apparatus incorporates an open celled foam wiper which is mounted for wiping engagement with the plate. The foam wiper is mounted adjacent a conductor which is biased to attract charged toner particles to the wiper as the toner image moves relative therepast. The wiper is periodically cleaned by a serrated or grooved portion of the plate which follows the image and mechanically dislodges toner from the wiper. A reverse bias is applied to the conductor as the serrations on the plate move past the wiper creating a field between the wiper and the plate which repels toner from the wiper to the plate. The toner is carried by the serrations on the plate to the developer unit for use by the electrostatic reproduction apparatus.

    Abstract: Electrophotographic copying apparatus has charging, imaging, transferring, precleaning, and erasing facilities in a conventional sense but incorporates a combined developing-cleaning unit that is operable to perform either function at the proper time during the copying sequence. A first version incorporates a photoconductor drum structure surrounded with the necessary electrophotographic elements including a single developer-cleaner unit. Another version incorporates a photoconductor belt movable forwardly and reversely. In either version, cleaning cycles may alternate with developing cycles or be activated following the production of a high number of images on the photoconductor surface. Conveniently, a magnetic brush element forms a contacting surface for conveying toner onto the photoconductor surface during developing and for scavenging residual toner from the photoconductor surface by bringing developer mixture into contact with the photoconductor surface during cleaning. Appropriate changes in biasing of the brush are made during operation.

    Abstract: An electrophotographic copier includes an automatic document feeder (ADF) 16 operable to feed sheets in turn from a feed stack. In order to produce duplex copies from single sides of the original documents, two copying runs are performed. In the first run, the ADF is controlled by logic circuitry 140 and input circuits 165, 146 to pass odd numbered documents from the feed stack to a receiving stack directly. Even numbered documents are copied. At the end of the run, when all sheets have passed through ADF, the receiving stack is re-positioned to form the feed stack, and a stack of produced copies is placed into the copy feed bin. In the second run, copies of the even numbered documents are produced on the back of the copy papers. A collator receives the copies produced by both runs. During the first run, the collator 20 is controlled by logic 142 to stack the sheets such that no re-ordering is necessary when they are transferred to the copy feed bin.

    Abstract: A xerographic copier is arranged to produce, on the imaging element (26) a developed test area (30) corresponding to an original of uniform colour and density bordered by an unimaged area (28). The reflectivity of both areas are sensed to provide control signals to alter either developer bias or illumination intensity. The alteration is carried out such as to maintain a vector, comprising the image voltage on the imaging element corresponding to the latent image of the test area minus the developer bias voltage, contant. The test area is produced in a cycle either at the end of a multiple copy run or in a cycle interrupting a lengthy multiple copy run.
