Abstract: The sheet sorter has K compartments each with a capacity for a maximum of L sheets, and a logic control system. A first detector supplies to the system a number N of sheets contained in the sets, and this number N is then compared with the maximum capacity L of the compartments. Where N exceeds this capacity, a signal is given. This causes H virtual compartments to be formed, comprising J adjacent ones, so that the total capacity J x L of each virtual compartment is at least equal to N. H first sets of sheets are then directed into the H virtual compartments.

Abstract: The invention concerns a method of controlling a multi-bin sheet collator. Adjacent collator bins are treated as one virtual bin and sheet feeding is controlled appropriately by skipping bins if the number of sets to be collated equals or is smaller than half the number of bins. Thus, multi-page documents having a number of pages exceeding the capacity of a single bin can be collated. In a combined copier/collator the number of copies selected by the operator determines the number of sets, and thus the size and grouping of the virtual bins.

Abstract: The control system of an electrophotographic copier includes jam recovery arrangements. The copier employs an automatic document feed system for feeding original documents in turn from a stack to an exposure station. When a copy sheet jam occurs, the original document at the exposure station is registered in a register stack (232) of a data store (230). The number of copies lost by jams are recorded in a copy count register stack (234) in the data store. At the end of the copying run from the original document stack, these can be reloaded and a further run processed using the data from the store to produce those copies lost during the first run. In order to assist re-collation of the replacement copies into the set, blank sheets may be fed to the copy collection device in place of the copies lost by jamming.

Abstract: The invention concerns a method and apparatus for operating a multibin sheet collator, particularly a copier/collator installation. Additional to the number of sets to be collated, the number of sheets contained in each set is entered into the collator logic. If this number of sheets in a set exceeds the capacity of a single collator bin, adjacent bins are grouped together and treated as one virtual bin with increased capacity, thus extending the collator usage. Sheets exceeding the total capacity of the collator can be fed into additional receptacles.
