Abstract: An aligner for aligning sheets fed to a stacking tray (24) having alignment reference edges (26) and (28) comprises an arm (18) movable through a closed path into and out of the tray. When the arm is out of the tray it is lifted to a height greater than that of the maximum height of a stack which the tray can accommodate. As it enters the tray, it drops on to a sheet being fed into the tray. It first aligns the sheet against reference edge (26) and then against reference edge (28).

Abstract: A xerographic reproduction device is disclosed, the device having a recirculating automatic document feeder that includes a sheet inverter, and a print path that includes a print station, a sheet invertor and a document set accumulator. The set accumulator includes a horizontal tray where at the individual sheets of a document set are stacked, one by one in proper page sequence. A stitcher is mounted in a fixed position at one leading-edge corner of the tray, so as to be coincident with a leading corner of the set. The individual sheets of portrait sets exit the print path and enter the accumulator tray, to reside in the tray with the set's first page on top of the set, facing upward, and with the stitcher located so as to bind the set's upper left hand corner. The individual sheets of landscape sets exit the print path and enter the accumulator tray, to reside in the tray with the set's first page on the bottom of the set, facing downward, and with the stitcher located so as to also bind the set's upper left hand corner.

Abstract: An aligner (46) is positionable adjacent a sheet stacking bin (i.e. 14) to engage sheets fed to the bin and drive them to reference edge (32A). The aligner comprises a rotatable shaft (52) carrying resilient radial flaps. The flaps are of a size such that sheets fed to the bins are both edge and surface engaged by the flaps. Preferably, the slots between the flaps are arranged such that they are positioned in a helix round the shaft.

Abstract: Documents fed serially from a document reproduction machine 10 are fed by a vacuum belt feed system 21 to sheet accumulation and stapling system 22. When at the registration position in system 22, the leading edge of each sheet has passed output bin 14, and the trailing portion is supported either by platform 16 or sheet sets thereon. After a set is accumulated in system 22, it is stapled and then ejected back into bin 14.
