Abstract: 1,149,699. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 28 March, 1968 [12 April, 1967], No. 14869/68. Heading B6F. [Also in Division H1] An electromagnetically operated hammer drive for a printer comprises a hammer 4 attached to a copper ring 12 which completely surrounds one limb 10 of a magnetic core 11. A coil 16 fits over an extension 15 of the core and has a polepiece 17 attached thereto whose legs 17a and 17b lie close to the ring 12. In one embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the legs completely surround the ring. The thicknesses of the legs and the ring (d and b) are chosen such that during operation of the hammer, the ring never moves outside the legs. The coil 16 may be fed with D.C. current or may be periodically energized as required to establish a motive magnetic field in the core 11 and partially through legs 17 and ring 12. Upon excitation of coil 13 the hammer 4 is moved across support 22 to push paper 5 against ribbon 6 and type face 8, because of the eddy currents in the ring 12. When the current pulse in 13 is reversed the hammer is withdrawn and the force produced in the ring by the leakage current opposes the force generated by the constant motive flux thereby damping the return stroke. In an alternative embodiment a permanent magnet provides the constant magnetic flux.

Abstract: 751,982. Statistical apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 19, 1954, No. 4928/54. Class 106 (1). A record card is provided with a plurality of separate prepared electro-conductive marks P 1 , P 2 , P 3 at each index point 4, 5, 6, &c., which are separated by non- conductive areas x, y, and which are joined electrically at required data-representing points by a superposed conductive mark S of conductive ink or pencil so as to complete a circuit between the prepared areas. Brushes B 1 , B2, B 3 are aligned with the prepared areas so as to respond to a completed circuit but not to the separate prepared areas. The brushes establish a circuit via a completed mark from a positive 110 volt line to the grid of a valve 1 which is normally biased by a negative voltage to a non-conductive state, but which is rendered conductive by the overriding positive pulse received at its grid when a completed mark passes under the brushes. Any known device 2 may be actuated by the valve 1.

Abstract: 750,268. Statistical apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 1, 1954, No. 2920/54. Class 106 (1). Apparatus for sensing electro-conductive marks on a record card comprises two brushes located directly one behind the other in line with the direction of the card column as shown in Fig. 4. The pair of brushes may be staggered slightly to accommodate marks made slightly oblique as shown in Fig. 3. An insulating spacer may be inserted between the brushes if required as shown in Fig. 5. The invention is stated to be an improvement on the prior use of three brushes as shown in Fig. 2 in that less width per column is required and the total data bearing area of the card may be correspondingly increased.
