Abstract: The loading mechanism (10) for a flexible disk drive is designed to load and center disk cartridges (44) of various thicknesses so that the disk within the cartridge is registered in a predetermined plane of rotation. A pair of guide rails, upper (28) and lower (30), is mounted at each side of the insertion path for the cartridge. The upper and lower rails are movable relative to each other and relative to the frame of the disk drive. This allows the rails to separate to receive diskette cartridges having different thicknesses. After the cartridge is inserted, the loading mechanism will move the cartridge to a reference position where the disk within the cartridge is in the plane of rotation. The separation of the guide rails controls the reference position to which the cartridge is moved.

Abstract: A valve assembly having a small volume cavity formed therein which communicates with two valves, one of which is closed completely before the other one is opened and vice versa. An actuating mechanism holds a valving member in one of the valves in an opened condition to thereby maintain a fluidic path through the one valve and the cavity. The other valving member at this time lies in a closed position preventing communication between this valve and the cavity. The actuating mechanism when actuated moves away from the valving member in the open valve allowing the open valve to close completely. The fluidic path through the one valve is thereby broken. A second fluidic path is made when the actuating mechanism moves the other valving member to an opened position.

Abstract: The ink jet head assembly disclosed herein has modular subassemblies with predetermined relationships between the subassemblies to minimize realignment of the ink stream when a subassembly is replaced in the field. The head assembly is modularized into nozzle, charge electrode, deflection electrode and gutter subassemblies. The charge electrode module is mounted on the nozzle module in a manner such that no field adjustment is necessary to center the charge electrode horizontally to the ink stream. The deflection electrode module is mounted on the gutter module in a manner such that no field adjustment is necessary to center the deflection electrode horizontally to the ink stream. The nozzle and charge electrode subassembly have a preset adjustment, and the gutter and deflection electrode assembly have a preset adjustment such that no field adjustment between these two subassemblies is necessary to maintain a constant flight distance for the ink drops. Finally, the nozzle module is adjustable to reposition the ink stream about the pitch axis (vertical adjustment) and the yaw axis (horizontal adjustment). The yaw axis adjustment may be preset. The pitch axis adjustment is the only mechanical adjustment necessary in the field when replacing the nozzle module.

Abstract: A new generation magnetic tape cartridge of the type having a leader block is provided along with a new generation leader block pin so as to prevent interlocking with respect to prior art leader blocks and leader block pins. The magnetic tape cartridge is a generally rectangular container which has four corners. One of the corners of the container is beveled and is provided with a well to receive the new generation leader block in a nested position. The new generation leader block has a notch which has top, bottom and middle portions. A cross section of the middle portion of the notch is smaller than the cross section of the bottom portion of the notch, and the cross section of the top portion of the notch is smaller than the cross section of the middle portion of the notch. The cross section of the bottom portion of the notch is defined by a circular arc of more than 180 DEG for receiving and capturing a new generation leader block pin. The top portion of the notch in the block is fashioned to confine the new generation leader block pin to a predetermined amount of lateral movement. The configurations of the notch of the new generation leader block and the new generation leader block pin are fashioned to prevent interlock with prior art reader blocks and leader block pins.

Abstract: An ink jet printing apparatus is described having facilities for printing information in character locations, (boxes) each character location comprising a plurality of vertical columns of drop locations, and a number of characters comprising a line of information. Structures and circuits are included for insuring correct location of information within the character boxes and also providing for one mode in which characters are printed continuously line-by-line and another mode in which characters are printed incrementally character-by-character. During incremental printing, as well as the first character in a line or group of characters, provision is made for re-bounding the printhead back into the box of the character just printed, that is, prior to the next character box to be printed to insure that when the printhead starts up again for the next character that all drop components for that character, including any located in the immediate vicinity of the character boundary, are properly placed during printing.
