Abstract: Europium silicates viz.-EuSiO3, Eu2SiO4 and Eu3SiO5 are prepared by intimately mixing SiO2 with one or any of EuO, EuCO3 or Eu(OH)2, heating the mixture to 800 DEG to 1600 DEG C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere e.g. in a vacuum or in the absence of oxygen and cooling. Alternatively the mixture may be heated in a reducing atmosphere e.g. N2 + H2, Co + H2 or pure hydrogen, at a temperature between 1500 DEG and 2000 DEG C. using preferably an iridium, a platinum, or a graphite crucible. The above silicates are new magnetic materials, which are optically transparent in single crystal form, and have a Verdet's constant higher by a factor of 10 than previously known materials. The materials find application in magneto-optical instruments (see Division H4) and in transformer cores and memory elements.
