Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for wild card search for a relation data base to use the reference of a hierarchical filter data base by generating a correspondent relation data base reference while using a backward index when a wild card is located at a prescribed position in a search character string. SOLUTION: The forward index of a character string in the data base is generated and afterwards, the backward index of a character string in the relation data base is generated. When the hierarchical filter base reference having the search character string including the wild card is received and the wild card is located at the prescribed position of the search character string, the correspondent relation data base reference is generated while wing the backward index. When the wild card is not located at the prescribed position, the relation data base reference is generated while using the forward index. In a LDAP directory service, for example, a client computer 10 performs a TCP/IP connection to an LDAP server 12 and the LDAP serve 12 supports a directory.
