Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for wild card search for a relation data base to use the reference of a hierarchical filter data base by generating a correspondent relation data base reference while using a backward index when a wild card is located at a prescribed position in a search character string. SOLUTION: The forward index of a character string in the data base is generated and afterwards, the backward index of a character string in the relation data base is generated. When the hierarchical filter base reference having the search character string including the wild card is received and the wild card is located at the prescribed position of the search character string, the correspondent relation data base reference is generated while wing the backward index. When the wild card is not located at the prescribed position, the relation data base reference is generated while using the forward index. In a LDAP directory service, for example, a client computer 10 performs a TCP/IP connection to an LDAP server 12 and the LDAP serve 12 supports a directory.

Abstract: There is disclosed a display unit associated with a remote computer system communicating with a host computer system. Information, which is currently being displayed on the display unit and information to be displayed thereon are compared to determine any differences which exist therebetween. If the differences exceed a predetermined value, a update command is generated and transmitted by the host computer system to the remote computer system along with the information to be displayed if facilitate the updating of the display unit. If the differences do not exceed the predetermined value, it is determined which of a plurality change categories should be used to transmit the differences to the remote system in the most efficient manner. An update command, which is associated with the selected one of the plurality of change categories, and data representing the differences are then enqueued for transmission to the remote system to facilitate the updating of the display unit.

Abstract: To enable assigning of disk drives associated with both a host computer and a remote computer coupled together by a communication link using normal DOS driver letters, DOS initialisation of the host computer is postponed until a remote session is established with the remote computer and the remote computer provides information regarding the disk drives associated therewith. Upon receiving the disk drive information from the remote computer, the host completes its initialisation and assigns drive letters associated with diskette drives associated with the host computer to diskette drives associated with the remote computer. Thus, host diskette drives are logically replaced by remote diskette drives. Any hard disk drives associated with the remote computer are assigned the next available drive letter on the host computer. Thus, the host computer and the remote computers become tightly coupled in that a user of the remote system has access to the diskette drives and any hard disk drives on the remote computer and any hard disk drives on the host computer.

Abstract: An interfacing system and method for use in computerized systems for intercommunication between application and database systems. A plurality of generic application program interfaces are employed as an interface for use in precompiler development as a runtime interface target to initialize data structures with data required to perform runtime database query language-related functions. The application program is isolated from the database kernel interface facilitating alteration of the database kernel interface without affecting the application program or user-developed precompilers. Parameters used by the interface are employed by applications written to a plurality of host languages. The applications indirectly use these data structures required by the kernel. The interface system supports serialized multiple thread access to the database kernel facilitating performance/functional benefits of multi-threaded applications.
