Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for operating a disk at a low temperature. SOLUTION: The problem of generation of torque higher than needed for the normal rotational operation of a spindle motor assembly in a direct access storage device caused by the higher viscosity of grease in a cold weather is solved by localizing heating to the spindle motor assembly to lower the viscosity of the grease, then causing a disk drive to heat itself during or after the spinning-up (rotation starting) of the spindle motor assembly.
