Abstract: The invention includes a first switch (4) and a second switch (1) serially connected between a telephone network line and a local telephone line which can be selectively connected to alternately either an auto answer modem or a human answer telephone set. A control register (12) is associated with the local telephone line, having data contents representing whether the local telephone line is connected to the auto answer modem or alternately to the human answer telephone set. A billing delay element (6) has an output connected to a control input of the first switch (7), for delaying the closure of the first switch for a predetermined interval after an answer tone is received over the telephone network line when the control register, which is connected to the control input of the first switch, indicates that the auto answer modem is connected to the local telephone line. A tone overload detector (5) has an input connected to the local telephone line and an output connected to the control input of the first switch, for interrupting the connection between the local telephone line and the telephone network line if tones generated on the local telephone line have a voltage greater than a predetermined amplitude when the control register, indicates that the auto answer modem is connected to the local telephone line. The control register controls the closure of the first switch when the contents of the register indicate that the local telephone line is connected to the human answer telephone set. In this manner, either the auto answer data operations or alternately the human voice signals can be selectively transmitted.

Abstract: 9-91-001 IMAGE SCALING APPARATUS FOR A MULTIMEDIA SYSTEM An apparatus for scaling an image as represented by an arrangement of picture elements. The apparatus scales the image from a first size to a second size based upon plurality of scaling parameters which represent a desired scaling factor. The apparatus includes a scaler circuit which receives the plurality of scaling parameters and an image signal representing the arrangement of picture elements. The scaler circuit manipulates the arrangement of picture elements based upon the plurality of scaling parameters to provide a manipulated arrangement of picture elements. The manipulation includes performing different operations on subsets of the picture elements based upon the plurality of scaling parameters. The operations include a drop operation, which omits a pixel which is received by the scaler circuit, a keep operation, which keeps a pixel which is received by the scaler circuit, a dual operation, which averages two pixels which are received by the scaler circuit, and a quad operation, which averages four pixels which are received by the scaler circuit. The scaler circuit provides the manipulated arrangement of picture elements as a scaled image.

Abstract: A call progress monitor for a computer telephone interface system. Energy detectors are connected to receive signals from a telephone line. A bandpass filter is connected to the telephone line, having selectable center frequency. A counter-timer connected to count clock pulses is reset by the energy detector and timing commences in response to the presence of a signal on the telephone line. The counter will result in a center frequency control means for the filter being slewed over a bandwidth of interest, in synchronism with the counting of the timer-counter. A signal detector connected to the filter indicates the presence of a pair of signal tones passing through the filter as it is slewed. Decoding means are connected to the counter-timer and the signal detector for generating a binary signal indicating the frequency of the bandpass filter which passes each signal tone. The binary signal is entered in a data register, and an interrupt posted to a host computer. During the remaining portion of a counting cycle, a cadence interval is detected and the data register is loaded with cadence data. An interrupt is posted at the end of the cadence measuring interval for signalling the computer to read the contents of the data register.

The expansion unit is also connected to a display device. Accordingly, the expansion unit controls the presentation which is provided on the display device.

Abstract: A MIDI/joystick interface apparatus is described which incorporates a shielded connector, a shielded cable, and a terminal block including a circuit board with an extensive ground plane surrounding the joystick connections and shielding the MIDI circuitry on at least three sides. The terminal block is a housing which acts as a radiation shield. The housing or terminal block may be made of an injected molded plastic material containing electrically conductive strands of metal or the housing may be plated or painted on its interior surfaces with an electrically conductive material to form a shielding layer which may then be further connected to the ground plane of the electronic circuit board contained within the terminal block housing. The terminal block provides connectors for MIDI-In, MIDI-Out MIDI-Thru and a pair of joystick interface connectors which allows the capability to connect both MIDI devices and two joysticks to the audio adapter card simultaneously.
