A storage matrix of gas-filled cells 17 has starter electrodes 19, 21 and sense electrodes 18, 20, each electrode being a conductor common to a row or column of the matrix and passing through the cell, together with a sustaining anode 16 common to all or groups of cells. A potential difference lower than that necessary to cause the cells to conduct is generated between anode 16 and the sense electrodes 20 and the selected cell is fired by applying a pulse to the appropriate row and column starter electrodes. Read-out does not extinguish the conductive cells and is done by testing the impedance between the sense electrodes. Clearing the store is effected by cutting off the voltage to anode 16. The matrix is constructed of laminated glass or plastic, the middle layers having accurately matched etched holes and the whole being sealed by heating in a low pressure inert gas.
