Conflicting resource requirements by the application programs are detected. An application may preempt a currently executing application by claiming the hardware resources currently in use. The application from which resources have been claimed is identified so that it may be resumed when the required resources become once again available. Before the resources from a given application are claimed by another application, the user is provided a warning so that he may alter the order in which the applications are run.

    Abstract: In a signal processing environment, voice messages are stored into and read out of a buffer in real time. Since voice messages are being stored and read from the buffer, different sizes and rates of information are being stored therein. Small packets of digitized voice are input to the buffer at a very high rate, while larger packets of data are output from the buffer at a lower rate and can be stored into permanent memory. The buffering of this digitized voice data occurs in real time using a ringed buffer. The transfer of data into and out of the buffer is under the control of a software application running on a host processing system. The producer of the digitized voice data is a signal processing system which converts an input analog voice signal into a compressed digitized signal. The consumer of the buffered digitized voice data is a software application program which removes blocks of multiple data records from the buffer for program execution.

    Abstract: A communication interface for providing asynchronous and telephonic communications is disclosed. The interface enables software applications, which are independent of any hardware or physical addresses, to operate on the interface. In this manner, the software applications can be written independent of hardware implementation and protocol implementation. A set of configuration parameters is defined for both an asynchronous and telephonic communication function set. Additionally, a set of interrupt conditions is defined for both the asynchronous and telephonic communication function sets. These parameters and interrupt conditions control the interaction of the software applications across the interface with the system hardware. Means are provided for directing commands coming from a software application across the interface to the system hardware. Likewise, means are provided for generating interrupts and handling these interrupts from the system hardware across the interface back to an interrupt routine within the software application.
