Abstract: A user interface control for scrolling a display of computer program data during retrieval of computer program data is provided. The control comprises a track, a bar overlying said track, and a thumb movable along the bar to scroll the displayed data; wherein the size of the track is indicative of the total amount of data being retrieved; and the size of the bar varies to indicate the progress of the data retrieval. Thus, the ratio of the size of the bar to that of the track indicates the ratio of available to total data. The advantage of this technique is that the user can see the progress towards completion of the data retrieval. The computer program data is displayed in a display area allocated to the computer program, and a size of the thumb (compared to a corresponding size of the track) indicates the ratio of the amount of data displayed in the display area to the total amount of data being retrieved. This has the further advantage that the scrollbar thumb does not change size over time nor move without user input, making it easier for a user to interact with the scroll bar control.

Abstract: Controlling an application instance using a graphical user interface. In response to the application instance providing a user input control for accepting a command from the user, a corresponding user input control for display in a thumbnail representation of the application instance is generated. When a thumbnail representation of the application instance is displayed, the generated user input control is displayed with the thumbnail representation of the application instance. In response to a user giving a command using the generated user input control, a corresponding command is given to the application instance. An indication is provided to the user via an icon indicator displayed on the thumbnail that an application instance has a dialog box that requires a response. The thumbnail can provided message text and buttons to allow user to provide their desired response directly to the thumbnail without restoring the application instance.

Abstract: Recording the interaction of a computer program via graphical user interface (GUI) in which one or more event queues are monitored and GUI interaction data logged. Further messages on the queue are identified to determine a net change to the window, and data representing the combined delta to the window are logged. The net change representation may be a serialization of the window changes. Messages may define user input to the GUI window. The logging period may be defined by message data content or quantity. Abstract: A method that can provide for efficient usage of screen real estate by controlling the display of graphical user interface objects. The method includes the step of identifying a selected part (405) or parts of a first GUI object (400) associated with an application program. Creating a second GUI object (410) that includes a visual representation of the selected parts (405) of the first object. The second GUI object is displayed on the display screen (200) so as to automatically replace the first GUI object. Detected user interactions with the second GUI object (410) are mapped to instructions to the first application program. This step of replacing the first GUI object may involve assigning the first object to coordinate space that is outside a display area of the display screen or graphics buffer. User interactions may then be mapped to a location within the first GUI objects assigned coordinate space that is outside the display area of the display screen.
