Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately remove skin while suppressing an attendant damage of the skin of a substratum at a medical treatment region by a method wherein a pulse light source which can feed a fluence exceeding a cauterizing threshold value, is provided, and the ejection light is made to direct a location on the skin, and also, a control is performed in such a manner that the specified location may be cauterized to a desired depth. SOLUTION: As feeding tools, a pipe 205 which feeds a ray 210 from a light source (pulse ultraviolet laser) to a tissue, an adjustable directing mirror 215 which changes the direction of the ray at a corner, a lens 220 in order to form the ray into a desired pattern at a location where the tissue is irradiated with the ray, and an adjustable lens/masking system such as a slit 225 at the feeding end, are provided. Then, the focal point of the ultraviolet irradiation is focused to a smaller region compared to a cross sectional area of a retiform elevation of the cuticle, and until the cuticle is totally deleted, the region is cauterized by irradiating the region with the ray. In this case, the ejection light is controlled so as to be a strength by which the specified location of skin can be cauterized to a desired depth, and a damage of the skin at the substratum of the medical treatment region is suppressed.

Abstract: A dye laser, pumped by a nitrogen laser, has been made to operate in both the TE01 and TM01 rotationally symmetric modes, regardless of the variation in laser wavelength. By changing the spacing of lenses within the optical cavity, the single laser can be made to switch from the TE01 mode to the TM01 mode and back again to the TE01 mode.

Abstract: A laser system (called a UV Dermablator) and method that enables a clean, precise removal of skin while minimizing collateral damage to the skin underlying the treated region. The depth of ablation can be controlled via feedback from the physiology of the skin, namely the infusion of blood into the area of excision when skin has been ablated to a sufficient depth to produce bleeding. A second laser, such as a uv light source with a different wavelength, to penetrate the blood, heating it sufficiently to coagulate the blood. Other features provide precise control, permitting the epidermis to be removed down to the papillary dermis, following the undulations of the papillary dermis. This lateral and depth control may be accomplished by using careful observation, assisted by spectroscopic detection, to identify when the epidermis has been removed, exposing the underlying dermis, with spatial resolution appropriate for the spacing of the undulations of the papillary dermis. Yet other features which provide a feedback control mechanism which utilizes the optical characteristics such as the colour, appearance and remittance of the definable skin layers to control the depth of ablation at each location.
