Abstract: Usage data describing a virtual machine (VM) 110 is collected by virtual firmware 170 in a virtual hardware layer 140 of the VM. Usage data is received from kernel subsystem 155 of the VM in a virtual buffer 178 and transmitted to collector 180 on host 130. Running the virtual firmware comprises an agent 310 in a kernel 150 executing code 174 of the virtual firmware and receiving usage data. Access to usage data is provided by a credential accessed user tool 168 in user space 160 of the VM in communication with the virtual firmware via a proc file system. The virtual firmware is protected via virtual trusted platform module (vTPM) 190 loaded in the virtual hardware layer by an operating system loader when the VM is created. The firmware inside the VM collects usage data unavailable from outside while being inaccessible by the VM apart from specific components.
