Abstract: The Figure shows an ink jet head 10 comprising a housing 12 having a cylindrical passage 20 containing a cylindrical tube 19 formed of piezo-electric material. A nozzle plate 49 is attached to the housing to register with a portion 46 of the housing wall of reduced thickness. Apertures 47 through the wall portion 46 register with nozzles 48 in the plate 49. The tube 19 is subject to an electric field established between an electrode formed internally of the tube and pressurized conductive ink in the passage 20. Longitudinal vibrations in the tube 19 are absorbed by resilient mountings 22, 23. When tube 19 is electrically excited pressure waves are set up in the ink in passage 20 and the ink jets issuing from nozzles 48 are caused to break-up into similar streams of ink drops. … In a modification the wall portion 46 is removed and the aperture so formed oovered by a flexible sheet diaphragm held against the housing by a manifold plate interposed between the none plate and the housing. The manifold plate has an open-sided recess registering with the housing wall aperture and communicating with the nozzles through an array of outlets through the bottom of the recess. In this modification the passage 20 is filled with liquid and ink is supplied under pressure to the manifold plate recess. Pressure waves established in the passage 20 are transmitted through the diaphragm in the ink in the manifold plate recess.

Abstract: 1,021,909. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 28, 1965 [Feb. 20, 1964], No. 3734/65. Heading B6F. [Also in Divisions B3 and B4] Documents 2 of paper, metal or ceramic are fed sequentially to a printing station 4 at which ink spots are selectively applied by means of electrodes 5 located near an electrically earthed rotating drum 6 immersed in a tank 7 containing ink, the electrodes being selectively energized with a voltage of about 3,000 volts by means of a keyboard 10. The documents are then fed to an error sensing station 13 connected to comparing means 15 where, for example, the keyed information stored in means 10a is compared with printed information sensed at the station 13. Following station 13, the documents are fed through a path 3c which overturns the documents as they are fed into an error correction station 17 at which the rear surface of the document is presented for spot printing to a row of electrodes 5a similar to electrodes 5. For each error sensed, a corresponding spot will be printed. From station 17, the documents are conveyed to a printing station 18 comprising 80 injection lasers 19 controlled by a power supply 21. Alternatively, a single laser source may be employed in combination with a deflection system.

Abstract: INK JET HEAD An inner cylindrical tube has its outer cylindrical surface spaced from an inner cylindrical surface of outer means to have an ink cavity therebetween from which ink is supplied through one or more ink jet nozzles. At least the inner tube is a piezoelectric material so that the inner tube vibrates radially when electrically excited to produce vibrations at a desired operating frequency whereby a stream of ink droplets is supplied from each of the ink jet nozzles. The spacing between the inner surface, which has its longitudinal axis coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the inner cylindrical tube, of the outer means and the outer surface of the inner cylindrical tube is selected so that the ink cavity is resonant at the operating frequency of the inner cylindrical tube. To maintain the lowest frequencies of perturbations in the axial direction of the inner cylindrical tube substantially greater than the operating frequency, the inner cylindrical tube can be formed of a plurality of longitudinal segments acoustically isolated from each other in the axial direction. In another form, the outer means is a body formed with a membrane providing acoustical communication from a liquid cavity between the inner tube and the body and each BO978011 ink cavity, which has ink jet nozzles at its end. The liquid cavity preferably has a liquid of substantially the same density as the ink. This enables each of the ink cavities to have a different colored ink if desired. BO978011
