Abstract: The present invention provides a method, apparatus, and computer program product for obtaining the location of, for example, a mobile device. The present invention comprising: obtaining an image of a target in a defined space; analyzing the image to obtain identification data and image positional data, the image positional data comprising a position in the image of a reference point relative to the target; using the identification data to obtain target location data comprising a location of the target in the defined space; and determining the location of the reference point in the defined space by combining the image positional data and the target location data.

Abstract: A digital pen that has an ink writing tip includes a laser on a pen body that directs light toward paper across which the writing tip is stroked. A diffraction grating reflects a reference beam and passes a scattered beam from the substrate toward translation detectors, which consequently receive interference patterns of light. A processor receives the signals from the detectors, generates position signals, and stores the signals. Also, a bar code detector receives a bar code beam from the substrate, and a three dimensional force sensor outputs a signal representative of multidimensional forces applied to the pen. Subsequently, the signals are uploaded to a host processor which combines them to produce rotation-corrected relative positions (if no bar coded paper is used) or rotation- corrected absolute positions (if bar coded paper is used) that can be used to render alpha-numeric characters or graphical representations.

Abstract: Systems and methods for optimizing performance of personal area network (PAN) systems that use electric fields as communication media between PAN transmitters carried by people and PAN receivers mounted on computers to which selective access is sought to be established. Multiple PAN receiver antennae are mounted on a keyboard, such that if a person with a PAN transmitter rests her arms on or near the keyboard, sufficient signal from the transmitter is sensed by one or more of the receiver antennae even though some of the signal is shunted away from the receivers through the arms. Also, a driven shield insulates a PAN receiver from nearby metal objects, e.g., a desk on which the PAN receiver is supported. Moreover, a multiple-electrode PAN transmitter reduces the deleterious effects on the signal from the PAN transmitter that can otherwise be caused by, e.g., loose metal coins that are present in a pocket in which the transmitter is carried. Further, differential receive electrodes prevents undesirable coupling of a PAN transmitted signal to a computer's receiver through a person who has positioned herself between the receiver and the person carrying the PAN transmitter to, for example, gain unauthorized access to the computer.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method, apparatus, and computer program product for obtaining the location of, for example, a mobile device. An image of a target in a defined space is obtained, the target encoding data from which its location in the defined space may be determined. The position of a reference point in the image which represents the location of, for example, a mobile device, is determined relative to the target. The location of the mobile device in the defined paces is then determined by combining the location of the target in the defined space with an appropriately scaled version of the relative position of the reference point to the target in the image.

Abstract: A passive secure data card 10, comprising: a card 12; an antenna 16 tuned to receive an external Radio-Frequency (RF) reader signal. In one embodiment the card also includes a passive power module 18 coupled to the antenna, being able to convert or harvest power drawn exclusively from the external RF reader 24 signal to supply one or more voltages to a biometric sensor 34 and at least one radio frequency identification (RFID) chip 20. The biometric sensor is configured to sense a biometric input from a card user and generate a biometric input signal (68). The RFID chip comprises an RF transmitter 32 as well as a processor 26 and memory unit 28 configured to implement a communication module that stores information and when activated reads and sends the information to the RF transmitter to transmit an RF data signal via the antenna. The biometric module stores biometric parameters, and in response to biometric input (e.g. a fingerprint) from the sensor compares the input signal to the stored biometric parameters and, and upon determination of a match activates the communication module.Session timing may be enforced to limit opportunities of third parties to snoop transmitted information while providing ample time to complete the card transaction. Biometric retries may be enforced to limit opportunities of third parties to hack the biometric security.

Abstract: A personal area network (PAN) communication system uses electric fields as a communication medium between PAN transmitters 12 carried by people 14 and PAN receivers 18 mounted on computers to which selective access is sought to be established. In use, the people's bodies interact with the electric fields in such a way as to pass signals from the transmitters to the receivers. Multiple PAN receiver antennas 18 are mounted on a keyboard 22, such that if a person with a PAN transmitter rests her arms on or near the keyboard, sufficient signal from the transmitter is sensed by one or more of the 10 receiver antennas even though some of the signal is shunted away from the receivers through the arms. Also, a driven shield (60, fig.5) insulates a PAN receiver from nearby metal objects (58), e.g., a desk on which the PAN receiver is supported. Moreover, a multiple-electrode PAN transmitter (68, fig.6) reduces the deleterious effects on the signal from the PAN transmitter that can otherwise be caused by, e.g., loose metal coins that are present in a pocket in which the transmitter is carried. Further, differential receive electrodes (96,100, fig.8) prevent undesirable coupling of a PAN transmitted signal to a computer's receiver through a person (86) who has positioned herself between the receiver and the person (90) carrying the PAN transmitter to, for example, gain unauthorized access to the computer.
