    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improved system and method for draping, i.e., mapping optional annotation on a surface. SOLUTION: The vertex of the annotation is projected to the surface of a (2D or 3D) model and reconnected, and the original outer appearance of the annotation is maintained. The results of this method are a new set of geometric shapes of the annotation that geometrically follows the surface of the model. A plane is defined by the middle point of the original line segment and two projected vertexes. A new line segment following the plane is prepared by performing 'surface walk', e.g. along a line, defined by the intersections of the plane and the surface between the projected points by using the plane.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a geometrical annotation simplifying device, system and method. SOLUTION: A permissible range window perpendicular to a test side is defined by a first permissible range specifying the amount of a first error measured by a distance from a simplified route in a plane contacting with a surface to an original route, and a second permissible range specifying the amount of a second error measured by a distance from a simplified route in a plane perpendicular to the surface to the original route. By a point-projecting process, one or plural second end points of a second side are projected on the plane of the permissible range window. By an invalidating process, the side is marked as 'invalid' and removed. By a selecting process, one of the second end points having a projecting point in the plane including the permissible range window is selected, and a reference point is deleted. An origin is connected to each second end point, and a new side replacing each second side of the test side and an original side is created, thereby drawing a simplified route.

SOLUTION: A system simplifies a geometric model in order to accelerate the rendering of a geometric mode. The surface description of the geometric model is stored in one or a plurality of system memories. The wire-frame description of the geometric model is also stored. The surface description is changed by a surface simplification process, and the approximation of the original surface description is prepared. The simplified surface is draped with the wire-frame description by a wire frame draping process, one or a plurality of draped line segments are simplified, and the simplified line segments and the simplified surface description are subjected to rendering to a display device.

    Abstract: A computer system and method for simplifying annotations on a surface includ es a tolerance process creating a tolerance window lying in a plane and centered on the query point at the end of a test edge and perpendicular to the test edge. The tolerance window is defined by a first tolerance that specifies an amount of first error measured by the distance from a simplified path to an original path in the plane tangent to the surface, and a second tolerance that specifies an amount of second error measured by the distance from the simplified path to the original path in the plane perpendicular to the surface. The original path is a set of original edges on the surface. A point projection process that projects a second end point of one or more second edges onto the plane of the tolerance window. The second edges have the query poin t also as an end point where the projection of the second end points are projected points. An invalidation process marks an edge as "invalid" and removes it both from the list of simplifiable edges and the final list of simplified edges. A selection process selects one of the second end points that has a projected point within the plane containing the tolerance window, deletes th e query point, and connects the origin point to the respective second end point, to create anew edge that replaces the test edge and respective second edges in the set of original edges to create the simplified path.
