    Abstract: Systems and methods for providing exercise devices with motivational programming (54). The present invention is particularly well suited to exercise devices that utilize one or more motors (30), and/or other electrically driven actuators to control one or more operating parameters of the exercise device. The present invention contemplates the use of programming that includes motivational content, and one or more control signals (64) synchronized with the motivational content for controlling operation of the exercise device. The motivational content preferably includes audio, and/or video (56) designed to simulate a group exercise setting. In addition, the motivational content can include instructional, and educational content for the benefit of the user. The programming can be live or prerecorded, can be broadcast over available broadcast channels, cable, satellite, the inter-net or any other means suitable for transmitting audio, and/or video signals. The present invention also includes means for reproducing the programming, including the motivational content along with the synchronized control signals.

    Abstract: An exercise device is configured to enable a user to interact with a trainer in real-time communication. The exercise device includes an exercise mechanism having a movable element for movement in performance of exercise by a user. Communicating with the exercise mechanism is an interface adapted for gathering a first real-time signal from the user. The interface communicates with a communication system for receiving a packetized second real-time signal including a synchronized control signal from the trainer. The exercise device includes an output device configured to reproduce the second real-time signal. The control signals carried by the second signal are used to control the operating parameters of the exercise mechanism in real-time.

    Abstract: An exercise device configured to sense and respond to objects in proximity to the exercise device is provided. The device includes a sensor configured to sense objects in proximity to the exercise device other than the user who is operating the exercise device. A console is in communication with the sensor that instructs components of the treadmill to provide, for example, an audible and/or visual response to the user of the exercise device, or to slow or stop the exercise device from moving. Sensors that are capable of sensing whether objects are within different spatial zones of proximity are disclosed. Multiple pre-defined and/or user-defined responses to objects detected in multiple corresponding spatial zones of proximity are also disclosed herein.
