In one embodiment, the present invention includes a method for determining if a system is compatible with an up-binning or down-binning to a hardware resource of the system through RFID tag communication, receiving instructions from a remote server to upgrade the hardware resource if the system is compatible, and programming the hardware resource based on the instructions. In one such embodiment, the hardware resource may be programmed by use of programmable fuses to enable circuitry of the hardware resource. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Abstract:
The method entails changing the performance, or clock-rate, of packaged chips 110, or similar hardware resource, prior to sale or shipping. The process of changing the clock-rate is known as up-binning or down-binning. The process is carried out using an RFID tag 114 that is in communication with the hardware resource. The tag and the chip may be formed on the same substrate. The tag receives instructions by RF communications 121 from a remote server 122 to upgrade or downgrade the hardware resource. The hardware resource is then programmed based on the instructions received via the RF communication means. In some cases the method first determines if the hardware resource system is compatible with an up-binning or down-binning. In one embodiment, the hardware resource may be programmed by use of programmable fuses to enable circuitry of the hardware resource.

A method for characterising and subsequently changing the performance of a hardware resource, such as a microprocessor. The resource has an associated RFID tag containing identification data. The resource is subjected to bin-splitting and down-binning before shipping. The performance, such as the clock-speed, of the resource can then reconfigured after shipping, possibly through up-binning. The reconfiguration may be achieved through use of the RFID tag.
