    Abstract: The method comprises: determining if a system is compatible with an up-binning or down-binning of a hardware resource 110 of the system through RFID tag 114 communication 121; receiving instructions from a remote server 122 and database 124 to upgrade the hardware resource if the system is compatible; and programming the hardware resource based on the instructions, wherein the programming includes unleashing further capabilities in the hardware item or resource. The hardware resource may be programmed by use of programmable fuses to enable circuitry of the hardware resource. The result of the programming, or re-configuring, may be to increase or decrease the clock-speed of a chip.

    Abstract: The method entails changing the performance, or clock-rate, of packaged chips 110, or similar hardware resource, prior to sale or shipping. The process of changing the clock-rate is known as up-binning or down-binning. The process is carried out using an RFID tag 114 that is in communication with the hardware resource. The tag and the chip may be formed on the same substrate. The tag receives instructions by RF communications 121 from a remote server 122 to upgrade or downgrade the hardware resource. The hardware resource is then programmed based on the instructions received via the RF communication means. In some cases the method first determines if the hardware resource system is compatible with an up-binning or down-binning. In one embodiment, the hardware resource may be programmed by use of programmable fuses to enable circuitry of the hardware resource.
