Abstract: A means for determining the location of a mobile device 50 in a communication system is disclosed. The communication system has a first communication device 50 which may be mobile device, and a second communication device 54,56 which may be a base station. The first communication device 50 transmits a first signal to the second communication device 54,56 and concurrently processes the first signal in a receiver of the first communications device 50. The first communication device 50 receives a second signal transmitted by the second communication device 54,56 and calculates a first time difference between the first and second signals. In a further embodiment, the second communication device 54,56 concurrently processes the second transmitted signal in a receiver of the second communication device and calculates a second time difference between the first and second signals. The time difference values may be used to calculate the distance between the first and second communication units. The calculates distance may be used to control hand-off decisions within the communications system.
