This invention relates to C14 to C20 alkoxy monophenyl sulfonium salt initiators having formula (I), wherein R is C14 to C20 alkyl; R1 and R2 are each independently C4 to C20 alkyl and X- is a non-basic, non-nucleophilic anion, which initiators are employed in the polymerization of mono- and poly- functional glycidyl ethers, alpha-olefin oxides and vinyl monomers or oligomers.

What is provided is a composition for cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers without color formation. The composition includes a defined additive comonomer to inhibit the formation of undesired colored materials during polymerization without affecting the properties of the polymer produced. The additive used herein copolymerizes with the vinyl ether to provide spacer molecular units of the additive therein whose presence precludes the formation of long chain conjugation in the copolymer which ordinarily would color the composition. Suitable polymerizable inhibitor additives include cyclic aliphatic epoxides, unsaturated carboxylic acids and their esters, styrene, styrene ethers, styrene oxide, and cycloalkene oxides, in an amount less than 5 % by weight of the composition.

This invention relates to a reactive diluent mixture employed in a free radical polymerization of film-forming monomers which comprises between about 25 and about 90 wt. % N-vinyl lactam containing 6 to 9 carbon atoms and between about 10 and about 75 wt. % of a non-cyclic vinyl amide having from 3 to 7 carbon atoms which is employed in a concentration of between about 10 and about 50 wt. % based on total film forming monomers.

A rapidly curable fluorocopolymer comprises (a) 40 to 60 mole % of fluoroolefin units, (b) 8 to 60 mole % of the monovinyl ether of cyclohexanedimethanol units and (c) 5 to 45 mole % of alkyl vinyl ether units, wherein the mole % of a = b + c. The vinyl ether group provides an enhanced polymer Tg and a primary hydroxy site in the backbone of the polymer for effective and rapid crosslinking upon curing with isocyanates. The presence of (b) + (c) in substantially equimolar amounts with (a) provides coatings having the desired hardness without brittleness, and in suitable ratio for reaction copolymerization with (a). In another embodiment, this invention relates to coating compositions containing the alk-1-enyl ether reaction product of a hydroxylated compound, an alk-1-enyloxy oxirane and from 0 to 95 % of an alkyl epoxide.

The composition comprises a mixture of between about 1 and about 75 wt. % of a reactive vinyl or alk-1-enyl ether cyclocarbonate having formula (I) wherein R is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R' is C2 to C4 alkylene; n has a value of from 0 to 4 and n' has a value of from 1 to 4 and between about 99 and about 25 wt. % of a polymerizable compound containing an onium salt initiator which is normally insoluble in said polymerizable compound or a mixture thereof. The invention also relates to the use of the composition as a protective coating on a substrate.
