Abstract:
Low voc hair spray fixative compositions containing a fixative which is a tetramer of vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl caprolactam, 3-(N-dimethylaminopropyl) methacrylamide and a C8-C18 alkyl acrylamide or acrylate, in predetermined compositional ranges of each monomer, and molecular weight, are described. The hair spray compositions herein are clear and low in viscosity, and form a spray of relatively small particle size which spreads evenly on the hair of the user as clear films which exhibit an effective high humidity curl retention property, good stiffness, and low tack and short drying times.
Abstract:
A hair spray composition of 80 % or less VOC includes a fixative which is the half-ester of a copolymer of maleic anhydride and methyl vinyl ether having advantageous physical and performance properties even at low fixative levels. The copolymer is made by polymerizing the monomers at a selected temperature in the presence of a predetermined amount of a polymerization initiator whose decomposition fragments are soluble in hydroalcoholic solutions containing high levels of water. The composition is clear and without precipitate formation, has a low weight average molecular weight and a narrow molecular weight distribution, or polydispersity, affording a low solution viscosity. The composition also forms a spray pattern of small particle size, providing clear, hard fixative films with superior adhesion to the hair of the user, an advantageous high humidity curl retention (hold), and low tack and dry times, in both pump and aerosol products.
Abstract:
A low VOC (volatile organic compounds) hair spray composition having a combination of desirable user performance characteristics is described herein. The hair fixative resin in the composition is a terpolymer of 40-75 % by weight of a vinyl lactam, preferably vinyl pyrrolidone, 15-40 % of a polymerizable carboxylic acid, preferably acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, and 5-25 % of a hydrophobic monomer, preferably a long chain alkyl (C8-C24) acrylate, methacrylate, acrylamide or methacrylamide. The terpolymer has a K-value of 30-55, preferably 40-50, which provides compositions having good sprayability in both pump and aerosol form, and small, fine spray particles.
Abstract:
Low VOC hair spray resin compositions containing homogeneous terpolymers of vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl caprolactam and 3-(N-dimethylaminopropyl) methacrylamide are described. The hair spray compositions are made using a solution of the terpolymer which is clear and low in viscosity, and which provides a spray of relative small particle size. The hair spray compositions exhibit an effective high humidity curl retention property.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a 0.5 to 7 wt.% solids hair fixative composition having superior moisture resistant hold and minimal tack duration which provides a stiff film on artificial or human hair and superior hair combability, which composition essentially contains a resin mixture of (a) a terpolymer derived from about 17 to about 30 wt.% N-vinyl pyrrolidone, from about 60 to about 80 wt.% N-vinyl caprolactam and from about 3 to about 6 wt.% di-C1-C4 alkyl amino-C1-C4alkyl-acrylate or methacrylate having a number average molecular weight of between about 20,000 and about 200,000 and (b) an N-vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer having a number average molecular weight of between about 10,000 and about 100,000; combined in a weight ratio of 1.4-6:1 (a) to (b). In the present composition, the vinyl acetate moiety of N-vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer interacts with resin (a) to reinforce stiffness and holding properties under conditions of extremely high humidity and materially lowers the duration of tackiness during drying.
