Abstract: The present invention relates to a fatty acid ester of an etherified polyhydric alcohol represented by the following general formula (1), a production process thereof, a cosmetic composition comprising this compound, and a production process of an etherified polyhydric alcohol via the ester. G(A)x(B)y (G: a residue formed by removing H atoms of all the OH groups of a polyhydric alcohol having at least three OH groups, A: -CH2CH(OH)R or -CHRCH2OH, R : R or -CH2OR (R : C1-C36 alkyl or alkenyl group), B: H or C1-C11 acyl group, x + y: the number of the OH groups of G, x ≥ 1, y ≥ 1, and at least one of y groups B: acyl group). The compound (1) is not only useful as an intermediate for the production of an etherified polyhydric alcohol, but also excellent per se in the performance as a cosmetic base, emulsifier, lubricant, oily component and the like.

CONSTITUTION: (A) A fatty acid polyhydric alcohol ester of the formula: G(B)Z (G is the residual group of a polyhydric alcohol after hydrogen atoms are removed from the hydroxyl groups in a polyhydric alcohol having 3 or more hydroxyl groups; B is H or 1-11C acyl group; Z is the number of hydroxyl groups of the polyhydric alcohol in G; Bs of z number have each at least one of H and an acyl group) and (B) an alkyl halide of RX (R is a 1-36C alkyl, alkenyl) are allowed to react in the presence of a base to give (C) a fatty acid ester of etherified polyhydric alcohol of the formula: G(R)x (B)y (x, y are a number of >=1 totaling to z). Then, the product is hydrolyzed to give the objective alcohol of the formula: C(Rx )Hy.

The compound expressed by formula II has excellent performances as a W/O type emulsifying agent and is capable of manifesting pharmacological actions such as hematopoietic promoting effects, antiinflammatory actions and antitumor activities and further utilizable as an antimicrobial and an antifungal agents, etc.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the recovery and reutilization of a catalyst and make it possible to obtain an aromatic ketone useful as a base for cosmetics, etc., and a raw material for emulsifying agents, oil agents, etc., from an inexpensive acylating agent, by using a specific catalyst and the specified acylating agent. SOLUTION: (A) An aromatic compound having one or more substitutable hydrogens in the aromatic ring is reacted with (B) an acylating agent which is a carboxylic acid (ester) such as a compound represented by the formula A-COOH [A is a (substituted) 1-36C aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic group] or a compound represented by the formula A-COO-B (B is A) by using (C) a catalyst that is a compound represented by the formula M(OSO2 Rf )3 [M is a rare earth atom; Rf is a perfluoroalkyl(oxy)] to afford an aromatic ketone. Furthermore, the reaction is preferably carried out by using (D) a cocatalyst that is a compound represented by the formula D-OH (D is A) in order to promote the reaction and improve the yield.
