    Abstract: PURPOSE:To efficiently remove microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses from the surface of a microorganism adsorbent capturing the microorganisms by irradiating the adsorbent made of a water insoluble polymer having pyridinium groups with ultrasonic waves. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism adsorbent capturing microorganisms such as bacteria, Eumycetes, algae and viruses on the surface is allowed to coexist with an org. or inorg. liq. in a vessel such as a glass flask. The adsorbent is then irradiated with ultrasonic waves from the outside of the vessel to remove the microorganisms from the surface of the adsorbent. A water insoluble polymer having pendant pyridinium groups is especially suitable for use as the microorganism adsorbent and the pref. frequency of the ultrasonic waves is about 1-5,000kHz. The org. or inorg. liq. is preferably n-hexane, cyclohexane, distilled water, an aq. inorg. salt soln. or an aq. surfactant soln.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve sensitivity and accuracy as a sensor by using a polymer beads having a specified repeating unit within molecules which are obtained by quaternization of a pyridyl group within polymer beads as a water insoluble macromolecular material. CONSTITUTION:Bridged polymer beads are prepared as follows: a bridgable monomer comprising divinylbenzene and other material as used as added in a vinylpyridine based monomer (monomer using 4-vinylpyridine is suitable); and a pyridyl group within polymer beads obtained by oil-in-water type suspension polymerization is quaternized. In suspension polymerization, CaCO3 and other inorganic salt which is hard to be dissolved in water are used as dispersion stabilizing agent. To obtain the quaternized form of the pyridyl group, a quaternizing agent of R-X (R is alkyl group whose carbon number is 1-16 and other material, and X is chlorine atoms or bromine atoms) is used. As a result, the repeating unit shown by a formula I (X is chlorine ions or bromine ions) is provided in the obtained molecule. The sensor is constituted by providing said bridge polymer beads (grain size of about 0.4mm) 3 at the part beneath a diaphragm 2 of a diaphragm type oxygen electrode 1.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable measurement of a concn. of a desired material quickly with reproducibility by arranging a container which is filled with a non-water soluble carrier whose surface is covered with a high polymer containing a pyridinium group as given by a specified formula in the molecule, and an electrochemical device to determine a substance which is generated or consumed with the action of microorganisms being separated from each other. CONSTITUTION:This sensor is equipped with a container which is filled with a non-water soluble carrier whose surface is covered with a high polymer containing a pyridinium group as given by a formula (wherein R represents a benzene group, a phenethyl group, a 1-16C alkyl group or a pentafluorophenyl methyl group and X a halogen atom) for adsorption of a microorganism in a molecule and an electrochemical device to determine a substance which is generated or consumed with the anion of the microorganisms being separated from each other. The high polymer containing a pyridinium group in the mole cule includes a benzyl group and phenethyl group or the like. The use of this sensor enables measurement of various substances such as saccharides quickly and easily in addition to BOD in water.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an antibacterial agent which can be used in the disinfection and sterilization of the skin, hair, clothes, etc., or as an additive for detergent, by using an active component consisting of a water-soluble vinyl polymer having specific pendant pyridinium group and having excellent properties from the viewpoint of industry and environmental sanitation. CONSTITUTION:The objective antibacterial agent contains, as an active component, a water-soluble vinyl polymer having pendant pyridinium group of formula [R is 1-18C (substituted)alkyl or 6-18C (substituted)aryl; Z is halogen ion, halogenite ion, nitrate ion, phosphate ion or alkylsulfate ion] (especially preferably a polymer containing the pendant pyridinium group in an amount of equivalent per 1g of the water-soluble vinyl polymer, containing the recurring unit of formula II, having a molecular weight of 5X10 -1X10 and expressed by the formula wherein R is benzyl). The antibacterial agent may be used in the form of a solution to be applied to textile or molded article.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To rapidly measure biological oxygen demand BOD by electrically measuring oxygen consumed when an org. compound is decomposed by bacteria adhered to a water-insoluble polymer material, by arranging the water-insoluble polymer material having a property adhering aerobic bacteria below the diaphragm of a diaphragm type oxygen electrode. CONSTITUTION:In a biological sensor for measuring biological oxygen demand BOD consumed by aerobic bacteria in water, a water-insoluble polymer material having a property adhereing aerobic bacteria is arranged below the diaphragm 2 of a diaphragm type oxygen electrode 1 by a rubber gasket 4. A measuring kit consisting of a reaction container 11 equipped with a recorder 11 and a magnet stirrer 13 and a specimen adding injector 12 is connected to the electrode 1 of the sensor. The sensor is immersed in ion-exchanged water until an output current becomes stable and, after stabilization, a specimen to be measured is added to the container 11 and the value of the output current is read and a BOD value is calculated from a calibration curve prepared.
